They had no right to try and dismember the US. They had exactly the same right as the colonies did to dismember the United Kingdom.
Read the Declaration of Independence. It asserts a God given right for any people to have Independence.

The same Declaration that they rebelled against. They had no problem violating the states rights of the North. Once, they lost the Government they had a hissy fit.
