As if landing a college teaching position wasn’t already difficult enough, the powers-that-be have placed another obstacle in job-seekers’ path: the so-called “Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion,” better known as the “diversity statement” or “DEI statement.” Many (most?) institutions now require such a document as part of the application packet along with the traditional CV, cover letter, and transcripts.
As a long-time advice columnist for The Chronicle of Higher Education, I frequently hear from academics on the job market. Lately, I’ve been getting emails asking how to write a diversity statement. I fear I’m not much help in that department, partly because I haven’t had any firsthand experience writing such statements but mostly because I find the whole concept not only absurd but incredibly toxic.
Still, I do what I can. I realize this is a hoop academic job-seekers must jump through, whether they agree with the premise or not (and I suspect, from the tone of their emails, that many find it just as objectionable as I do). So I direct them to articles in The Chronicle and elsewhere with titles like “Five Don’ts in Your DEI Statement” and “What Not to Write in Your DEI Statement.”
What is perhaps most striking about these essays and others like them is the focus on what applicants should NOT say. This illustrates perfectly the fundamental problem with diversity statements: Their purpose is to prove a negative—namely, that the writer is not a bigot—apparently by demonstrating to the committee’s satisfaction that he or she has whole-heartedly embraced the DEI agenda.
If I were looking for a new job right now—which I’m not, although I suppose I might be after this essay is published—I would most likely have to submit a diversity statement

My “diversity statement”.
“I hate stupid people, regardless of their race. I will not compromise my integrity to cater to race hustlers. If you don’t like it, don’t hire me.”
If GENDER can now be auto defined, and there is a gender called NON BINARY.. Why can’t we put RACE in the same dozens of categories, and end up with a NON BINARY race which is colorless. So MANY modern American families are very BLENDED and their is a dozen DNA mixes in the kids. WHY should they be forced to choose BLACK!
It’s not just teaching jobs. Pretty much any job description anywhere now includes the idiotic DEI statement.
“Toxic Absurdity”
Ok it’s both toxic and absurd. Literary intersectionalism. Those descriptors might be mutually exclusive.
Their reasoning is like what you might imagine if you were vetting those attempting to board the Ark (yes, That ark!). They know that everyone forbidden entry is gonna die. They revel in such power.
If you refuse such, you are engaging in “wrongthink” and they will do everything they can to kill you, and your children.
It’s like the asinine: “if you could be any animal, what would you be?”
How about...?
“I dream of a day when my children are not judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
Thus I will strive to do the same in my employment interactions with co-workers and customers.
BOOM!
The left just keeps wiping the floor with our side in this culture war.
They won’t be satisfied until everyone publicly knuckles under.
And there is no more effective weapon for them than threatening to call you a racist if you don’t comply.
There’s nothing that the powers-that-be on our side fear more.
Until we and especially the “leaders” on our side learn to embrace that insult and fight back instead of scurrying under the nearest rock at the mention of it, we are doomed. Just defensively denying it and profusely apologizing won’t work, instead it will only prove to them that they have a weapon that you are terrified of.
So how would you handle it if somebody called you a racist or a phobe of some kind or other?

Obviously, “our side” isn’t our side. They play for the Chamber of Commerce and Team China.
There currently is no opposition party to the progressive-corportist alliance. Nothing will change until that changes.
Call them an idiot—and refuse to speak to them because they are an idiot.
If someone calls you a Unicorn there is no need to debate the issue...
“Nothing will change until that changes.”
And who is going to change that?
“So how would you handle it if somebody called you a racist or a phobe of some kind or other?”
I posted this once before. I was at the entrance of Trump Tower. A guy dressed up like the statue of liberty said, as I was entering, “are you a sexist, racist or homophobe”. I told him I was all three. I walked on before he could think of a reply.
I don’t get offended when someone insults me mainly because I have reasons for my beliefs. I welcome someone questioning the underlying reasons.
“I told him I was all three. I walked on before he could think of a reply.”
Excellent! 👍👍
Must have left him speechless at having his most feared weapon vaporized.
Embrace the “insult” and then fight back, like martial artists do.
I advised someone who was told to write a diversity statement to quote the Golden Rule and Biblical verses about loving one another. That should be the basis of everything and it’s been around for centuries. No PhD in anti-racism and no diversity czar can improve on any of that. And you don’t have to pay one of these high-priced DEI administrators a cent for their “guidance” on how not be a racist. Just tell them to go to church once in a while and take notes and then distribute them on campus or in the workplace. There’s nothing new under the sun when it comes to human relationships.
Needless to say, my friend did not get the job. Nor did he want to work in an academic position in which he’d have to comply with this garbage in order to keep his job.
You’re hired!
