SUPERYACHT: WashPost Owner Jeff Bezos’ Climate Hypocrisy Exposed

Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos just solidified himself as one of the biggest climate activist hypocrites in world politics.

Superyacht and BezosThe city of Rotterdam reportedly gave the green light to disassemble one of Netherland’s oldest bridges to make way for the third richest man in the world’s superyacht, according to BBC. Bezos postured himself as an environmental icon for years. In 2020, Bezos made headlines when he pledged $10 billion dollars of his personal wealth to form the Bezos Earth Fund.

The hypocrisy is truly astounding: The Conversation reported that “a superyacht with a permanent crew, helicopter pad, submarines and pools emits about 7,020 tons of C02 a year.” The Environmental Protection Agency found that “[a] typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.”

Washington Post reporter Miriam Berger wrote, flatly: “The Dutch company Oceano has been building the massive vessel for an estimated $500 million in the nearby city of Alblasserdam. Once completed this year, the ship, known as Y721, will be the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International.” Bezos’ previous yacht was reportedly listed for the humble price of “131 million euros ($158 million).”

I’m sure there are. The point is Bezos wants to show the world he can do what he wants.

Them’s some pretty big hand sewn/loomed cotton sails right? And the hull is made of naturally occurring carbon fiber too.

Are you saying that ugliness is not carbon free?

Why can’t the masts be stepped beyond the bridge?

What are the sails for? Couldn’t he afford proper engines.

I don’t know. As an earlier poster suggested, perhaps they calculated the cost of stepping the masts on-site along with the cost of dismantling the bridge and figured it was cheaper than other alternatives.

A square-rigged ship? I’d always read that fore-and-aft-rigged ships are the most wind-efficient ships. But Bezos’ is no traditional sailing ship.

The Dutch yacht building industry is a big one in that country and their shipbuilding prowess goes back centuries. So they have some economic reasons to make accommodations to buyers of superyachts.

Not defending Bezos. Just pointing out that there are “extenuating” issues.

If he really wanted to save CO2 emissions, he’d have had the yacht built with nuclear powered propulsion...

So he could virtue signal that he is “green”.

Well all know most of the uber rich only pay lip service to global warming nonsense and this yacht proves it with Bezos.

bottom line, I think the boat is bad azz and a great use of 1 billion dollars. Nuts
