Violence has spiraled at a Manhattan middle school in one of the city’s top districts this year — and administrators aren’t doing enough to stop it, a group of parents told the Post.
A string of incidents at 75 Morton, including a bus stop beating and a cafeteria body slam, drew a rare visit from Department of Education security chief Mark Rampersant on Friday, sources said.
Some parents assert that principal Valerie Leak — who is in her first year at the helm — has neglected violent incidents and relied largely on restorative justice strategies to maintain order.
Instead of suspensions and other measures, the approach has students try to peacefully hash out disputes in circles under teacher supervision.
“That’s fine, but when there are no other consequences, things are going to happen,” said one mom. “If kids know they can get away with something, they do it. That is what’s happening here.”
Conditions in the building led to a student Snapchat group named “75 Morton Fights” that shared brawl footage.
One clip shows a confrontation in a school stairwell where hair is yanked and punches are thrown. Another clip posted to the group shows a student being beaten at a nearby bus stop.
Leak sought to stop them from being circulated.
...
Some of the incidents between kids at Morton have been racially charged, Leak acknowledged in one email.
PTA president Maya Brewster said that most of the parents at the diverse school supported Leak’s performance and the school’s disciplinary approach.
“We are doing the hard work,” she said. “What is not acceptable is having to constantly battle with a community of people who do not support it.”

Since blacks commit violent crimes at far higher rates than other races, "equity" means tolerating instead of punishing and deterring that violence.
just more of the same old Media-Dem Party BS, let blacks lie, cheat, steal, commit violence, and claim that it’s all whitey’s fault for trying to suppress the natural urges of blacks.
And they’re just egging them on.
That is because the kids are not the important ones in the school.
I taught in urban public schools for decades. And while we teachers were appalled by the violence, administrators took a different view. For them, it was all about public relations. Their approach:
Step 1: Ignore the violence.
Step 2: When pressed, issue a bland statement of concern.
Step 3: Go back to step 1.
By the way, suburban administrators are not that much different. They just have the advantage of less fights to begin with.
Better homes = less fights.
You do not actually believe that the admin and teachers CARE about teaching and the kids do you? Kids are just a means to an end.
“Manhattan school plagued with violence...”
Bottom story of the day.
Ah, at last the problem comes into focus...in the 16th paragraph.
“That’s fine, but when there are no other consequences, things are going to happen,” said one mom. “If kids know they can get away with something, they do it.“
Same with bureaucrats and elected officials. No consequences, no change in behavior.
Black kids beating up white kids.
I’m enjoying Manhattan descending into chaos way more than I should.
Blacks beating up on white kids is a part of black privilege.
If the white parents don’t like it they need to move out of Dodge.
I’m not a parent, but it seems to me that you have to vote with your feet and get your kids out of that environment ASAP. There was no violence (literally zero) in my childhood. I can’t imagine how it impacts children to be with other students who have such impulsive and spontaneous violence, but I wouldn’t wait to find out. The culture of violence among urban minorities is the essence of the crime problem, despite what the President says about the gun problem. If I were raising kids today, rather than coping with it - I would move away and let others cope with it.
Whenever a word like "restorative justice" it used, you know its wrapping for a whole host of ridiculous leftist attitudes that will come with it.
We can guess at the story: Mainstreamed poor black kids from dysfunctional homes were put into a relatively high-performance school with middle class whites and asians. Disconnect, anger and violence result.
It gets worse. I saw in the Post today that a high school in upper Manhattan or the Bronx had to send all the kids home last week because they only had 2 “safety officers” when they normally have 14! The kids were standing in the rain for hours because it took so long to get through the metal detector.
Doesn’t sound like school to me.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
“We are doing the hard work”
This, right here, these six words, are CRT speak.
We had nuns that would step in and whup both parties involved then the kid were thrown out of school but that was a LONG time ago.
