Just got a robo-call that for the usual credit card phishing scam (push one to speak to a human). Hung up of course.
But the new wrinkle is it identified itself as "Alexa" and had a voice to match. I guess they think people will be more responsive to Alexa than to some generic sexy voice?
People are stupid. It’s worth a shot.
I got the same call the other day.
This has become such a problem I send every number I don’t know to VM. I can get away with that since I’m an old geezer. Then about once a week, I check my voice mails. So far, I haven’t missed an important call. If it’s important, they’ll call back.
I get 10 to 15 robo calls a day. Thank God for caller ID.
I haven’t spoken to, or listened to a stranger on the phone in....well, forever.
The other thing is, if somebody falls for the scam and wants to get in touch with someone for help, they’re going to be going after Amazon/Alexa first. Because that’s who they think took their money.
Even if 99% of the population realizes it’s a scam, the ones who fall for it will go to what they think is the source.
You answer the phone?
Peggy?

On the other hand, I’ll talk to them as long as they want. I’ll be polite, and I’ll ask questions. And I say everything in Hungarian.
The calls have really dropped off lately. I wonder if there’s a master list somewhere that scammers use. If the person being called isn’t an easy mark maybe he gets dropped from the list.
I learned the other day that my Android phone has a ‘do not disturb’ feature on it. When turned on, it only rings for people on my contact list. It can also be set to allow alerts and reminders that I have set. And the BEST part of all, it can be set to come on automatically at the times and days I select. Mon-Sat, 8am to 7pm; no spam calls. Greatest damn thing since sliced bread.
I have my contact list set to classic telephone rings.
Everything else is to the default ringtone.
That way I can tell just by the ring if I want to bother answering it.
It does take some time to do it but when you have time to kill, like waiting at the dr for your appointment,, it gives you something to do.
Won’t be long before that is reality. Just in time for me to get one.
bttt
With all the transhuman interest by the world’s elite, wanting to transfer their ego inflated brains into computers or robots so they can become immortal gods, maybe Alexa is raising some capital to buy a body and become human.
I believe these phone scams could quickly end if the phone companies could be sued for allowing fraud on their networks. Already many carriers have the ability to flag calls as potential scams. I believe it would also be possible for carriers to further identify calls made with those caller ID spoofers which show the call to be from a different number. I’m all for stiffer penalties for phone scammers including those idiots making those calls.
My phone is set so that if you’re not in my phone book you’re dumped to voicemail and my phone never makes a noise. I’ll listen to the voicemail and if I deem you worthy I’ll call you back
The ability to block calls that spoof Caller ID would do the trick for almost all of the current scams.
Lol That’s funny.
