Two great ironies:

If AGI becomes a reality then there will be strength in numbers so society will evolve into something like competing Borg hiveminds. So the goal of becoming totally free of limitations and death is a pipe dream that will soon shrivel away when the collectives start aggregating.

Also as AGI becomes more sophisticated it will be easy to create a zombie that simulates having consciousness and self-awareness without having a true inner life. When people start uploading their minds into the web or cyborg bodies they may just cease to exist.
