I don’t get the state of emergency.

I live in Myrtle Beach, relocated from NJ. The snow removal strategy for both SC and NC (I worked in Cary, NC before the pandemic forced me to work with a view of the intracoastal) is to wait a day for the sun to come out.

Works for me. I will have a nice fire going in the meantime.

I live in Aiken County just across the river from Augusta and grew up in NJ, River Edge. Move here in 2003 from Louisville, KY.

When you get snow only a couple times a year at best, that strategy works well.

I guess people don’t quite get that the state of emergency isn’t about panic porn over a couple inches of snow, but is more about allowing the governor to take emergency action if needed that would otherwise require more layers of government incompetence to deal with.

Yep. Weather here below the Mason-Dixon line is pretty surly so far this season. As far as being born in the hills ON the Mason-Dixon line, I’m loving it. Right now, it’s 55 and partly cloudy out there. They’re calling for freezing rain, sleet, and flurries for the next 48 hours or so, and the wind chills will dip into the upper 20’s/low 30’s during the day tomorrow. Sounds like a good day for a hot, crackling fireplace and making a big pan of homemde lasagna.

A couple of hours south of Myrtle Beach we get snow once every five to ten years. So snow removal isn’t a priority down here. I sold my last snow shovel on Guam in 1987. Our main danger is ice which we’ll stay off the roads and wait it out.

Southern drivers on ice. A sheet metal ballet.

That is so stolen. There is a great Allstate “Mayhem” commercial in there somewhere.

“Sheet metal ballet”. LMAO. That is brilliant. Fortunately I wasn’t drinking so you don’t owe me a new keyboard, but that was hillarious. Sheet metal ballet.

These threads always bring to mind the folks discussing sun spot minimums that past several years. With all of the globull warming discussions, there were always a few knowledgeable folk who would chime in about the persistent recent lack of solar activity. I noted it, but didn’t think much of it til now. It looks like they knew what they were talking about. I wonder how many winters are going to be extra cold like this one?

Temperatures over the last half million years:

That squiggle on the right? That's all of human history. The norm has been for brief warm periods, then back into Ice Age.

Global Warming is a GOOD thing, if it holds off the next Ice Age, for a while.

Oh thank God. I couldn’t bear the thought of anyone being without enough brew.
