Satellite antennas here at Svalbard are linked to mainland Norway via two subsea fiberoptic cables.

Disruption at one of two undersea cables to Svalbard There is no redundant between the Arctic archipelago and mainland Norway after loss of power in the area where the fiberoptic cable follows the seabed down to a depth of 2,700 meters in the Greenland Sea.

The cable was probably severed because of Climate Change.

Everything bad that happens anywhere is caused by either Trump or Climate Change. And I don’t think Trump is involved here.

Seismic activity often plays a role in these kinds of incidents. The seafloor is over 8,000 ft deep in some areas that the cable traverses. Lots of stuff can happen at that depth. No submarines can go that deep so unless they announce at what depth it was disrupted speculation that it was man made activity is just that - speculation.

I am guessing that they are glad to be good customers of Elon,

Hopefully Starlink has essential connectivity functions covered.

Norway and the USA, beginning under Trump I believe, created closer naval ties predicated on NATO. The Russians are not happy about this expansion or any expansion of NATO as I believe it violates a past treaty with Russia wherein we would not expand NATO.

I believe the Russians did this with some obviousness.

It is a wonder it ever worked.
Here is a video of a oil pipeline and data cable being laid down and it shows the very rugged seabed.
A simple landslide will destroy the cable and pipe.

“The Langeled pipeline (originally known as Britpipe) is an underwater pipeline transporting Norwegian natural gas to the United Kingdom”

Oh man, I was thinking of retiring there too! Now I won't be getting any videos from Svalbard huh? I love watching videos from there.

Looks like Putin is starting to show just a bit of what he can do if Biden and the EU don’t learn to get out of his backyard.

It could be sabotage or maybe something else but it’s disconcerting.

In the fifties I seem to remember there was some scifi movie where something like this happened because of some horrific underwater monster.
