Just FYI - should’ve mentioned this in the intro here:
BEWARE COVERED PIECES!
This is a prime reason to list the acts performing - such as, “Sh-Boom” by the white CREW-CUTS, not the black CHORDS.
Also came up early on with “Unchained Melody” - PAY ATTENTION TO THE ACT! (Also why I make a play list for people to check!)
This happened ALOT in the ‘50s - constant covers, but it wasn’t just black vs. white. “Davey Crockett” has probably 3 or 4 covers that made the top 50 list for the year!
I rated them as per your Youtube video links with specific performers. Of course, as we know, some of the later covers are often far superior by other artists.
For example, “How High The Moon” is good with the original performers (Les Paul/Mary Ford) in the list, BUT is lifted from good to utterly sublime in the much-slowed and haunting cover by Pat Suzuki.

First time I remember hearing it was the opening to “Biloxi Blues”, albeit it was anachronistic for a movie set in WW2 (about by a dozen years), but it was fitting.
Hi, didn’t mean to direct it at you, but FR is not easy to ping without dragging out the entire huge list and bugging everyone at the very end. Pointless.
But, in case anyone reads the end, maybe they’ll think of that issue going forward!

OVERALL SO FAR (1st half of decade)
- Mona Lisa running away with it! 8.9 points/vote. Ahead of “Tennessee Waltz” with 7.86!
- Sam’s Song (and Bing’s other hit, Simple Melody) sadly hanging far back, 3.23 points/vote. Poor Bing (I’ve never heard these songs at all yet it’s Bing and they were #4 and 5 on the year).
- Right in the median area of 5 pts/vote, “Little Things Mean A lot” and “Doggie in the Window”. Let’s see if they make it to the top 64 brackets.
- Some surprises to me: “Harbor Lights” so high. I’d never heard of this version or the act, Sammy Kaye. Hope people weren’t thinking of the wonderful Platters version! Also, “Wanted” was so far down on the list. It was #2 on the year and is a beautiful song!
Next up, Round 1B, latter half of ‘50s.
