Years ago I read an article, which proved that math can be taught to ghetto kids.

The story goes that there was a narcotics raid, and the sellers were kids who also held the cash. An officer counted the cash and announced the total. "Count it again" said one kid. The officer counted it again and came up with a different total, and the kid agreed that it was correct.

The adult thugs would recruit kids who didn't know North, South, East, West or their right from their left. But if they made a mistake in selling the drugs and had the incorrect amount of cash, they got the hell beat out of them. Thus, they learned how to count.

If you went to my school ... had the same books, the same instruction, the same classrooms, the same everything and still can't make it... were you asleep?

In school I wasn't the genius of every course, in every the class but I busted my chops and worked, even for a "C", if I had to. It was a bummer because my brother could do calculus in his head, but it didn't cause me to give up! Did you cut class, fall asleep, laugh-off your assignments, refuse to read the books, refuse to apply yourself.... etc.? Why did you give up?

How can you come to me, NOW, and say it's MY fault and demand FREE COLLEGE???

Grade school and HS were BOTH free, there were no barriers to school there... what did you do THEN?

So there are no wrong answers in math. Your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to cross a bridge across San Francisco Bay designed by an engineer who graduated from a university that taught that math is racist and that there are no right answers. Me, I’ll take the ferry.

God bless your daughter. Not enough talented teachers like her out there. Kids just want to learn — if they feel empowered.

Just today a parent of a black kid called me to complain that his white math teacher “doesn’t speak his language.” I said, “Dad, do you speak math?”

He got it and replied, “Can you help the kid?” I told him that I can’t, bc I don’t speak math either, but I’d be glad to find him someone who can show him that he can learn math, even if his current teacher — or his dad — doesn’t think so.
