They could always find healthier sources for fries. There are plenty of varieties in Bolivia—blue, purple, red, etc. Then sweet potatoes are growth in the South quite frequently (the South of the United States that is).
One local store has all sorts of varieties of potatoes from all over the Americas. Maybe McDonalds can use this opportunity to introduce something new, colorful and healthier. But then again, plain white is what the management wants.

WOAH! Rhonda McDonald is lookin’ really........tall.
About the fries thing, though. How hard is it to just use potatoes? They’re super easy to grow.
Of course, I’m continuing the FR tradition of NOT reading the entire article.

Japan grows a fairly decent crop of taters in Hokkaido as it has soil very similar to Idaho and a climate similar to Wisconsin.
But it is far less expensive to import them from the Pacific Northwest. I think this is the issue here and it isn't a long-term issue.
The Japanese do love their fries and have the most McDonald's locations in the world, second only to the United States.

Now let’s visualize an American McDonald’s drive thru with a person of color being told no on the fries order.
Company would have to have policy 1) franchise shift manager
informs SWAT team 2) employee informs customer in measured tones and says “we are sorry for the inconvenience.” 3) all duck behind bullet proof shields as SWAT team rappels down roof.
Saddest story aside from actual killings of employees was the one where a young black employee was grabbed by the irate driver and pulled out of the drive thru service window. She was petite and could fit through.
She fell between the curb of the building and the car wheel and was then kicked and beaten by not only the driver but by another man in the back seat who got on top of her to beat her more severely.
