Are there cracks in the alliance between Tehran and the Houthi militia that has taken over large parts of Yemen? According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the Houthis are seeking the expulsion of Iranian ambassador to Sanaa, Hassan Arlo.
In order for this to happen, the Houthis are seeking permission from Saudi Arabia to lift the one-time flight ban and allow the flight to Tehran.
This is no small matter, the Iranian "ambassador" is a senior member of the Revolutionary Guards who was smuggled into Yemen last year and is considered the most senior representative of the Iranian regime in Yemen.
The reason for the Houthis' desire to expel Arlo from Yemen is not clear enough but apparently indicates the desire to reduce the influence of the ayatollahs on what is happening in the country after seven years of bloody battles.
Will Israel pick him off on the trip home?
It would a shame if his plane had mechanical difficulties on the flight back and crashed.
The Saudis and their allies have long exaggerated the role of Iran in Yemen. They ship some arms, but the Houthis have their own agenda, and have won their victories themselves.
Yemen was rather poor but a mostly quite civilized country before the extremist Muslims and Iran turned it into a war zone
