This will be my first attempt at scones, as far as I can recall.

Besides the dough being a sticky mess, mine always tend to be dense, not all fluffy like the pictures show.

Thank you! I’d love to try making scones. There’s a bakery near me that sells raspberry ones with a lemon glaze on top - so good.

I think Scones are similar to Shortbread in taste, but softer in texture when all is done. I haven’t had very many.
The recipe mentions using nuts and dried cranberries.
That sounds tasty. Adding a wee drop or two of almond & lemon extracts can change the character of any dessert.

Me Mum used to put dates in her scones ...

Scones go great with good coffee.

Thank you for sharing.
Scones are not easy to find in stores and I love them.

Oh thanks for sharing! Not that I need anymore delicious things to cook and eat. I always “bake things for the grandkids” ;)
I haven’t tried making scones in a very long time, the recipe reminds me of my Soda Bread recipe.
Now, to find clotted cream .....

Thanks for all the replies! When I try to do this, I’ll post about the results here.

Sounds like you are over mixing, activating the gluten which is good for breads but not cake type doughs.

Yes. See #9.
And if the fire department is trying to put out a fire at your coffee shop/scone spite store, let them pass. Just a tip. (Picture from the same season of Curb your Enthusiasm)

Try making griddle scones. I think that is how they were traditionally made.
If you go camping, you can mix the ingredients ahead of time and cook them over a campfire or portable stove.

I guess if they were not as hard as rocks, they’d be called Muffins.
