I have been listening to a lot of Beatles recently. To my surprise, I have come to find a lot of it trite and precious, while a dozen or so rock ‘n’ roll songs remain fresh.

Exceptions might be Let it Be and Hey Jude — both timeless and classic.

Great rock ‘n’ roll Beatles songs include Revolution, Twist & Shout, Dizzy Miss Lizzy, You’re Gonna Lose that Girl, Money (That’s What I want), Long Tall Sally, Roll Over Beethoven, and You Really Got a Hold on Me. The songs where John really lets it all out. They had respect for Little Richard, and it shows.

A lot of the Beatles catalogue is stale because they took more artistic chances than say, the Stones. A lot of it was bound to lose its appeal. Overall of course they were a great band, though it’s tragic how much they did to mainstream the drug culture. In that respect they will have a lot to answer for.

Even young people hate new music. Listen around you to how much is from the 80’s and 90’s. It’s pretty rare to hear newer music played in common spaces unless it’s rap, which isn’t really music.

I like Elmer Bernstein, Patrick Williams, and Lalo Schifrin’s stuff.

When the wife is gone, I crank up Big Band and Martini Music on the Luxman/Klipsch KG-4’s. It’s good background working music.

I don’t hate it, I don’t listen to it.

I find very few current songs/music enjoyable..Somewhere in the later 90s,IMO, music changed from fun to angry.

It’s not really music. It’s syncopated talking.

Not a bit. I didn’t originate it, though I don’t remember where I first heard it.

New music: Millennial Wine, breathless children pedophile pop, corporate beat mixes, etc.

If you want some new music that is worth listening to, check out The Warning, a hard rock trio of sisters from Monterrey Mexico who are Daniella (Dany) 21 Guitar/Lead Vocals, Paulina (Pau) 19 Drums/Lead Vocals, and Alejandra (Ale) 16 Bass/Backing Vocals (occasional lead vocal). Their lyrics are outstanding, mostly written by Paulina, and they are masters of their instruments. Most songs are in English, with an occasional Spanish one thrown in. They just released the first half of their 3rd album as an EP, and are just starting to tour again (they played at Welcome to Rockville in FL in November) and are opening for the Foo Fighters in Mexico early next year.

Their first exposure was in 2013 with a cover of Enter Sandman (they were 14,12 and 9 at the time) that has over 23M views on youtube and did a new version with Alessia Cara for Metallica’s Blacklist album (and did a music video of that cover - arranging/recording and shooting the video in one week - with them in Mexico and Alessia in Canada due to Covid).

Their 2nd album, Queen of the Murder Scene is a concept album (they call it a rock novel) that was released in 2018. It tells a story of unrequited love to obsession, stalking murder and madness. They were independent and funded through Patreon and produced it themselves. It’s a real contrast to their personalities as they are smart, funny and happy when they interact with their fans (which they really do a lot). It really should be listened to in order, but all of the songs stand well on their own.

Didn’t intend to write a book, but I’m really impressed by these young ladies. Finally, I’m 64 and have enjoyed and seen many of the great rock bands of the 70’s and 80’s, and they well deserve to be right up on stage with any of them.

“Rap is rhythmic speech.”

The funny thing is that Gilbert and Sullivan popularized that genre in the late 1800s with their “Light Opera.” They called it “patter song.” My wife and I went to a LOT of G&S productions by “The Lamplighters” in San Francisco and immensely enjoyed discovering G&S and their political skewering of politicians.

That’s easy. New music sucks, for the most part. Any talentless hack with an auto-tuned PA system and a sequencer can be a pop star.

Also, are they including hip-hop in their definition of music? That sucks even harder.

Reminds me of a scene from M*A*S*H:

Frank Burns - “Why does everyone take an instant dislike to me?”

Trapper John - “It saves time, Frank.”

I don’t listen to anything from my youth(60-70’s). I now like this style of music:
