Chips Ahoy and Oreos are two brands that have created a ridiculous number of minor variations of their products so they can dominate shelf space. The grocers do nothing about this because the cookie companies provide free labor to stock the shelves.

This may just be a result of "market magic" but the end result is less variety and more monopoly.
