Marriott Again Sides With Xi Jinping, Refusing to Host the World Uyghur Congress

Marriott International’s been simping for China’s Xi Jinping for a few years now, first firing an employee who simply liked a pro-Tibet tweet, then praising the dictatorial way in which the CCP dealt with the pandemic they caused. Now, they’ve gone even further by refusing space to the World Uyghur Congress, which was holding a conference in Prague, Czechoslovakia.

According to Axios:

Working with local partners in Prague, organizers for the conference reached out to several hotels for quotes, Zumretay Arkin, the Munich-based program and advocacy manager for the World Uyghur Congress tells Axios. The group then sent a representative to visit the Marriott.

• “At first, the person didn’t mention the background information on the conference and the organization that was organizing it,” Arkin says. That information came up during the visit.
• Not long thereafter, an email arrived from an events manager at the hotel:
  

  “Thank you very much for your visit today. Unfortunately, I have to inform you that we are not able to offer the premises. We consulted the whole matter with our corporate management. For reasons of political neutrality, we cannot offer events of this type with a political theme. Thank you once again for your time and understanding.”

The email from the events manager was sent October 1.

The Chinese Embassy in Prague condemned the World Uyghur Congress’s conference and all politicians that participated. Axios also reported:

The World Uyghur Congress has repeatedly drawn the ire of Chinese authorities, who have declared it a terrorist group for allegedly fomenting unrest in Xinjiang, though the group does not promote violence and is on no international terrorist lists.

When Axios contacted Marriott’s corporate offices in the Washington, DC area, a spokesperson said that when the email from their property in Prague referenced “corporate management,” they meant the local hotel, because hosting the conference would not have violated any “political neutrality” policy. However, earlier this year Marriott took the step of pausing contributions only to lawmakers who “voted against certification” of the 2020 presidential election after the events of January 6, which was a much more political stance than that taken by some other multinational corporations, which paused all political contributions at that time.

And, as the Independent Women’s Forum’s Inez Stepman pointed out, Marriott took a very concrete position supporting an actual terrorist organization, Black Lives Matter, and called out “pervasive racism” in the United States:

Seems pretty politically UN-neutral to me, and that what Marriott’s afraid of, more than anything, is inspiring the ire of leftist organizations and communist dictators.
