Something about her voice just grabs at your soul. It’s like she’s giving last rites to someone actively passing.
I don’t disagree, and she has 100x the singing talent of Janis Joplin, and 10x Carole King (whose strength was writing), and 4x Carly Simon and Stevie Nicks. But I don’t like her work that much.
Similarly, when I hear Vera Lynn singing we’ll meet again, I get chills because of the context of the song. For a different kind of singing, I found Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” and Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man” gets the elicited response. Your heart aches for both of them.
I would like to hear how Grace Slick would have done “Total Eclipse of the Heart”.
