Earlier today, we reported about 58-year-old truck driver Edward Durr, who defeated longtime State Senate President Steve Sweeney. Durr, who only spent $153 on his primary campaign, has just won southern New Jersey’s state Senate race, beating out the longest-serving Senate president in the state’s history.
Having lived in New Jersey his whole life, Durr started his campaign by introducing himself door-to-door and, as a self-proclaimed “simple man,” he made a campaign video primarily by himself.

When referencing his opponent, Durr said, “He did not fight for the people, and that had to end. I’m a person who believes in the right to the people. I’m a firm constitutionalist believer, and I believe in people’s rights. When I saw how people were being mistreated or ignored, that angered me to say: ‘I’m going to make my voice heard.'”
After watching the state’s leaders respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and being disappointed in their actions, he decided to take a shot at running for office. In his campaign video, Durr focuses his criticisms on Sweeney’s passive response to the state Governor, Phil Murphy, forcing COVID patients into nursing homes which resulted in over 8,000 senior deaths.
His campaign video also appeals to all New Jersey families who lost their jobs during the pandemic, pointing out that 1/3 of the state’s small businesses were forced to close down. He also highlights the rate at which residents are leaving the state. The video ends with Durr declaring that it’s time for a change and, as he gets on his motorcycle, tells his viewers “Let’s end single-party rule.”
Now, Politico is reporting that the defeated NJ State Senate President Steve Sweeney is refusing to concede the race to the truck driver who humiliated him, citing (surprise, surprise) 12,000 ballots that were just found in one NJ county. The name of the county where the 12,000 ballots were “found” has not yet been released.
“The results from Tuesday’s election continue to come in, for instance, there were 12,000 ballots recently found in one county,” Sweeney said in an email to POLITICO. “While I am currently trailing in the race, we want to make sure every vote is counted. Our voters deserve that, and we will wait for the final results.”
Sweeney, who as Senate president is the state’s second-most-powerful elected official, was down more than 2,000 votes to Durr, a truck driver who says he spent less than $10,000 on the race.
Sweeney’s projected loss in South Jersey’s 3rd Legislative District was the most shocking in an election that featured a number of surprises, including Gov. Phil Murphy’s closer-than-expected victory over Republican Jack Ciattarelli.
And if he was ahead would these 12,000 ballots still be “ found”? .
Good for nothing bums.
I’m thinking that if Voters in Iraq dipped a finger in purple ink to show that they had voted.
Then we should have red and blue ink fingers and possibly even poke that inked finger on the ballot not for a fingerprint but just a spot of the color on the page.
Or something similar.
The bummiest. Fo sho.
You’re absolutely right. There is no greater threat to the Republic now.
Maybe the best possible outcome for Mr. Durr’s health is being cheated out of his win. In New Jersey.
“12,000 ballots is quite a large number, and this from just one county in NJ.”
Don’t be silly. Those ballots came from a NY precinct that self identifies as NJ.
No. In that case, once the re-election of Sweeney would have been certified, the 10,000 outwardly or apparently valid ballots in question (presumably the vast majority of which will have been cast for Sweeney), the same having been segregated out and held in reserve in the first place solely to serve as an “ace in the hole” or electoral insurance policy devised to pay off only in the case of an actual loss by Sweeney (literally, Sweeney not having received enough legitimate votes to surpass those of his Republican opponent), would not have surfaced at all, much less been counted. Instead, all 10,000 of these votes would have been secretly, quietly and unceremoniously discarded.
” this would only magnify the already salutary impact”
That’s what I was thinking. After McAwfuls remark about parents having no business telling the state what to teach their children. There’s a lot of Momma Bears out there woke up looking for their cubs. I’m watching for those parents to go out and claw this back to reality. Those momma’s are no longer tolerating the casual corruption and gaslighting. Imagine the casual corruption of announcing... OH... well here’s 12,000 votes I just extracted from my backside!
Sorry, 12,000 ballots.
But what’s 2,000 ballots among friends. Amiright?
Could the contrast in the eyes of the average disinterested voter between the apparently naive but virtuous Durr and the clearly sophisticated but corrupt Sweeney be any clearer? The moral power of this rapidly developing political “fable” is bordering on New Testament biblical. Manna from Heaven this is!
Funny how ONLY DEMOCRATS FIND “VOTES” FOR THEMSELVES!!
Let me guess, Durr was leading by 11,000?
There were 63,949 total votes cast in that district. How many were they expecting? How many has Sweeney gotten in the past? Does the number of votes cast in previous elections in that district normally equal or exceed 75,000? If the answers to these questions are at all shady, then the 12,000 “missing” ballots cannot be counted. To allow them would prove NJ elections are as corrupt as we all think.
Mitch & McCarthy got this!
I like it.
That’s what Senate Presidents do. They make mob bosses look weak.
In Maryland, the Senate Office Building was actually named after the sitting Senate President, who’d been the mob boss for 20 some years. Nobody even went to the bathroom with his permission.
The Truck Driver could drive up in his truck, open it, and show 120,000 ballots.
Better than a car trunk.
Now THAT’S how you steal an election
12,000...how convenient. Not 11,050, not 11,900 or even 12,250. Sweeney knows that Durr doesn’t have the money to fight this in court and it’s doubtful that the New Jersey Republican committee will come to his rescue. Their plan to bail out Sweeney is progressing as planned.
