The Chinese government has told families to keep daily necessities in stock in case of emergencies, after COVID-19 outbreaks and unusually heavy rains that caused a surge in vegetable prices raised concerns about supply shortages.

There's a lot of concern on the internet about this... even the internet in China. The PRC is downplaying it... they say it is partly weather related or just in case there are Covid lock-downs over the winter. How concerned do you think we should be? Is this preparatory for an invasion of Taiwan? My concern is that the Chinese seeing how weakly led the USA is now, might see this as an opportunity to retake Taiwan.

And if done here the woke crowd will accuse those of hording, being survivalists, then want to come take the stuff because they’re too stupid to stock up themselves. “What the heck, there’s always Safeway”

We export and export a huge amount of food to China AND China owns many food producers in the US. If there is a shortage there, then we will have one here. January 2020 I was watching what was happening in Wuhan, so I went to Lowes to buy N95 masks. I have some for shop work anyway. Lowes was out...all the Lowes in Central FL were out and were Ll the Home Depots and ACE Hardware Stores. The story was the same at each...a little old Chinese lady came in twice a day and bought everything on the shelf... I’m not saying we will see this level with food staples but I wouldn’t surprise me.

There’s always ‘Safeway, until Safeway runs out of produce. I shop at FoodMaxx, the produce has been steadily declining in both quality and quantity. This last week they had virtually no cucumbers.. just a few half rotten small sized ones. Hoarding veggies only works if you know how to preserve them.. I wonder how many Americans have those skills?

I went on a mask hunt while the virus was still just in Wuhan and entering Italy. It was amazing how fast they disappeared... I could find none in January of last year.

Such fortuitous windows of opportunity don’t come along all that often in history. China knows this, and they know Biden is a push over. They just got Hong Kong under control; now its time to bully Taiwan into submission.

Look for them to ramp up the aggressive posture against Taiwan shortly after the Olympics are over.

Less than 1 percent of the U.S. food supply comes from China. For a few specific items, like apple juice, garlic, canned mandarin oranges, fish, and shrimp, China is a major
supplier.

So, no. It won’t happen here. We grow more than enough food to feed our people, China doesn’t and never has.

Food stores in general are showing signs of fewer products and sharply rising prices.

Stock up what you can, comrade.

Sharply rising prices, yes. I live alone and my groceries cost me around $70 a week until recently. Now I’m lucky to get out of there without it costing $120. I’m even thinking of putting the cats on a diet.

China buys a great deal of rice from us (I’m in the North Sacramento valley) I wonder how that supply chain is holding up?

Luckily I’m a natural hoarder, just in my DNA. Can’t stand debt and probably save too much to, but sleep well at night.

“So, no. It won’t happen here. We grow more than enough food to feed our people, China doesn’t and never has.”

Yep, our grain bins are overflowing with corn and grain. We also have single family homes with large backyard gardens and Burpee Seed Company, has sold record amount of seed to home gardeners in the last few years. Young people are taking up gardening like never before.

“Farm to Home” operations ( all small family owned farms) are growing and becoming super popular-bypassing wholeslers and the food stores.

We might get a few empty shelves but it will be due to a driver shortage or other such problems.

“AND China owns many food producers in the US.”

They are selling to the US consumer. If there ever was a real food shortage or war with chyna the US gov’t would nationalize them in a instant.

Transport effects farm to market, but doesn’t it also impact market to farm.. I’m thinking here of fertilizers mainly. My understanding is a great deal of our fertilizer comes from China?

Well, I can. And people who don’t know how to do it, there is the fantastic AL Gore-invented thing called the Internet.

Biden won’t do it, but we should immediately stop exporting anything to China.

Carter embargoing grain exports to the USSR after their invasion of Afghanistan was one of the major causes of his failure to be reelected. I remember Reagan’s campaign lambasting him over that. I doubt whoever is running the government (most likely Obama) will take that step short of an outright aggressive invasion of Taiwan.

“My understanding is a great deal of our fertilizer comes from China?”

I was curious also. 93% of phosphate comes from Canada. Most fertilizers come from Russia, Tobago and Trinidad.

We have huge underground reserves of all components to make fertilizers but it is cheaper to import according to the google post I just read.
