National government sector lobbying
Taxpayer-funded lobbying is government-to-government lobbying. Counties, cities, school districts, public facilities and associations of public employees can use public funds to influence legislation and appropriations at the state and federal levels.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors, for example, lobbied for what were called shovel-ready projects under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The U.S. Conference of Mayors specifically wanted the funds from the Act to go directly to cities, as opposed to being funneled through state governments.[1]
The following is a partial list of national government sector lobbying associations. These organizations are or have been partly or completely funded by tax dollars, either with direct payments from government treasuries or via employee reimbursement for professional association dues. They represent local and state governments from across the country, where state-specific associations only represent governments within that state.
