Wow…I hope you somehow connect with your mentor again. Thank you for that interesting background information.
And thank you for your service. I come from a Navy family. Dad served 28 years, brother served four years. I was a “brat” from birth until I went off to college. I was a young adult when Dad retired and then he taught civilian flight school - both ground and air school. As he put it, “teaching doctors and lawyers how to fly.”
And I have been an avid reader since I learned how to read waaaay back when. I even belong to a book club where we actually read and talk about the book each month. LOL
I wouldn’t trade my upbringing for anything, but I will say, with all the moving around...there were times I didn’t appreciate the opportunity I was given.
I find it funny that there are people out there who take issue with the appellation of “Brat” as in “Military Brat”. I have found that most I know fully embrace the moniker...:)
Yes...we are BRATS and proud of it. Remember the days when they would play Colors and Taps, and if you were outside, you had to stop whatever you were playing at or doing, face the flag, and stand at attention?
Hehehe...when we were kids, you weren’t “grounded”, you were placed on “restriction”!
Yes!! Those were dreaded words when we were kids. “You’re on restriction for a week.” Fortunately, it was rare in my case. 😇 (I just didn’t get caught often.)
I wouldn’t trade that upbringing for anything either, even though the question “Where are you from?” can sometimes be complicated. LOL To this day, I haven’t completely gotten the wanderlust out of my system.
Perhaps it should be explained to those who think “brat” has negative connotations that the term is pretty old and comes from “British Regiment Attached Traveler.” 😏
There is a song "Over The Hills and Far Away", and these are the lyrics with a reference to "brats" even back then...
Over The Hills and Far Away (1776 version)
Our 'prentice Tom may now refuse
To wipe his scoundrel Master's Shoes,
For now he's free to sing and play
Over the Hills and far away.
Over the Hills and O'er the Main,
To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,
The queen commands and we'll obey
Over the Hills and far away.
We all shall lead more happy lives
By getting rid of brats and wives
That scold and bawl both night and day -
Over the Hills and far away.
Over the Hills and O'er the Main,
To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,
The queen commands and we'll obey
Over the Hills and far away.
Courage, boys, 'tis one to ten,
But we return all gentlemen
All gentlemen as well as they,
Over the hills and far away.
Over the Hills and O'er the Main,
To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,
The queen commands and we'll obey
Over the Hills and far away
I love the Traditional version of "The British Grenadiers" (with its lyric "With a Tow Row Row and a Row Row Row" that is so evocative of the drums beats they played on the battlefield) she does and also (for comparative purposes) performs the Americanized version of the same song that the Colonials changed the lyrics to.
Great album! So yes, I think the term "brat" as associated to the military children does go back a ways...
You have spent time in and around the military, so you know the most commonly asked question of ANY new person, and usually the very first one is “Where are you from?”
I had to explain this to my wife...:)
She asked me once “Why do you always ask people that?”
Heh, YOU know why!

Great songs! Beautiful voice…thanks for posting. I like that British Grenadiers and Free America have the same music but lyrics with different viewpoints. I also like the full sound despite minimal accompaniment.
Heh, YOU know why!
Absolutely! :D
