Joe Manchin Throws Another Block Into the Biden Agenda - He's Standing by the Filibuster

Republicans have been against raising the debt limit — especially given that Joe Biden wants to break the bank and pass massive spending spree legislation — and have already voted twice against it.

So in order to raise the debt limit, Democrats have been trying to figure out how to get around the filibuster and raise it by a simple majority. Democrats have been tossing around the idea of an exception to the filibuster.

But Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) said today he isn’t having any of that. He said once again today that he’s standing by the filibuster and he isn’t going to go for any exemption from it

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) urged party leaders to work with one another on the debt ceiling crisis. Despite the gridlock on the matter pushing democrats closer to changing the filibuster, Manchin says he is still staunchly opposed.

From Fox News:

“I’ve been very, very clear where I stand, where I stand on the filibuster,” Manchin told reporters Wednesday. “Nothing’s changing. But the bottom line is we have a responsibility to be the adults. Our leadership has a responsibility to lead and that’s what I’m asking, imploring them to do.” [….]

“We are not going to default as a country. We will not default. That’s the responsibility we have as senators, as Congress, as 535 of us responsible to protect this great country,” Manchin said. “I implore them, engage, start working, work this out. This should not be a crisis.”

According to Newsmax, Manchin said he would block any effort to nuke the filibuster. “The filibuster has nothing to do with debt ceiling. Basically, we have other tools that we can use and if we have to use them, we should use them.”

Now, that means that the Democrats have to actually work out an answer and they can’t cheat their way out of it by trying to kill the filibuster again for the umpteenth time. That of course has them gnashing their teeth and trying to figure out what their options are.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has thrown a proposal out on the table in regard to the debt limit that my colleague Bonchie will be writing about at greater length, but it remains to be seen if that will work out as some Democrats are already rejecting it, and it comes with strings that put them in a box.

Interestingly, according to Newsmax, Manchin also said he was sticking with his $1.5 trillion top number on the reconciliation bill. That would seem to contradict many reports yesterday that he might be amenable to going up as higher, such as to $1.9 trillion.

So it remains to be seen how they will proceed. But they aren’t going to do it be doing in the filibuster.

If Manchin holds his ground until 01/20/23, then I will applaud him. When 3.5 becomes 3.2 then he will cave.

The filibuster is key to Joe Manchin’s strength and Joe will do his best to keep it around.

Joe knows that one Republican can always be persuaded to vote with Chuck, but probably not five or ten.

An AOC dream is often the nightmare of dozens of Democrats.

Full agreement, let’s hope he holds true to those convictions as least as long as they have majority.

If the filibuster falls, the courts get packed and the Constitution falls, then America falls.

Hard to have imagine America on that proverbial cliff with synama and Manchin standing in the way of the Marxists.

I just hope it’s not for show.

Why doesn’t he just switch already?!

He has NO business being in today’s Dem party.

His approval in WV would leap 15 points if he did.

We country folks have a saying “make hay while the sun shines”. Basically, make the most out of every opportunity.

The sun has been shining on Manchin since the election so much that he is the present power broker in DC. Not Pelosi, not Schumer, nor Kamala nor Joe Bidet but Joe Manchin. At least until the mid terms.
Joe is making hay while the sun is still shining on his WV azz.

Joe is up for reelection in 2022. He won in 2018 with less than 50% of the vote in a state that is going from red to deep red. Treading that line is one way of keeping his job.
If he holds this pattern and the pubbies end up the majority after the mid terms then the pubs have no ax to grind with him. They may even side with some things he wants.

If the dummies take the senate in 2022 then Joe has made enough solid democrat votes (abortion, Obama care, etc) to keep him out of the way of the firing squad while pleading that he did what he needed to to keep the seat democrat.

Joe looking out for Joe as best he can.

Praying Manchin has true standards. Thanking the good Lord that he holds the line now, pray he stands firm and tall for USA.

.
He loudly objects, gets TV time, labels himself responsible… and Caves.

He’s done it over and over.

I do wonder if he became really ticked off when the WH Chief of Staff essentially said Manchin is no problem, he always does this and comes around to supporting the spending.

prediction....the democrat establishment is turning joe mansion into a viable presidential candidate. all of this is manufactured bravery on his part. think theater for the mases. the democrat party knows that they need a pretend outsider in 2024 and they know that any gain they get by changing the rules will hurt them long term so this whole budget mess is manufactured to build a viable person politicly in the next presidential election

“Why doesn’t he just switch already?!”

Careful what you ask for, you might get it!
When people switch parties it doesn’t turn out well for anyone.

“He has NO business being in today’s Dem party.”

Manchin voted to keep Obamacare, fund Planned Parenthood, voted AGAINST the Jobs Act 2017 and voted twice to convict President Trump.

“His approval in WV would leap 15 points if he did.”

Doubtful.
The folks in WV know the guy very well. He won his last reelection with under 50% of the vote. His state is now a red state...Joe Manchin knows it. He knows he is the only state wide elected democrat and the ONLY democrat in the WV congressional delegation.

All this is simply self preservation by a knowledgeable politician.

Me too, but even if they buckle tomorrow, they would have this country another 9 months, which is more than the 500,000 Trump voters who didn’t think voting in the Georgia Runoffs was worth their time.

Manchin is a hypocrite...he always caves, HOWEVER,

THE LADY FROM ARIZONA, Ms. Sinema, she could, if she is strong, become the savior of the Republic.

She could be our Joan of Arc???

You’re right, thanks.
I knew I had typed in the wrong year but forgot to go back and fix it. I’ll list it under laziness for now. : / )

Methinks 2024 might be a tad late for putting Manchin on a Presidential ticket as VP. He is 74 now and after the clusterscrew the similarly aged Biden is making of things the dems might be smart to jettison both Bidet & Harris for a younger team.
If Bidet hadn’t gone on record more than once promising a woke WOC as his running mate Manchin would have been perfect.
With the mess the obviously demented Biden is making a similarly aged Donald Trump will have to make an extremely strong showing in 2024 just to get the nomination.

I’m not giving the dems credit for looking as far ahead as you seem to do. With their proven ability to steal elections I feel they don’t care who they run. Just have a decent looking combo to show on TV and then steal the vote count on election day.
If they could steal enough votes to get Low T Joe elected they can get anyone/thing elected. Plus they have all those new voters flowing across the border.....

“I want him to switch now”

Did you not see what I said about his voting record? A reliable democrat vote on all the time honored democrat issues plus voting twice to convict President Trump?.

Are you a masochist missing his sadist?
