I think that this was done in my grade school days. The teacher would pick a child who was responsible and trustworthy.

I’m not so sure it’s a good idea in a pandemic, especially without vaccination.

Others here are saying the same thing. Apparently it’s common practice. But, like you said, it’s probably not a good idea during a pandemic. This school even claims it violates school policy.
