For 20 years in the Water Business and too many of them Reading Meters I always kept a box of Treats in the truck and a few in My pocket. After a couple of Readings most of the Dog’s on My Route were sitting at the fence, tails wagging and almost smiling when I pulled up to Read. Even the “really mean and big ones.”
Mind over matter...
That system works for most dogs—for not for chows chows.
They will ignore the treat and growl at the stranger.
Rumor is they guarded the loot of the Mongolian Hordes back in the old days...
I had a couple of “scary“ dogs years ago. One day I opened the food to get the mail, and they bolted past me. They ran half a block after the mail lady, It was a race to see who could get there first, and sit for a treat. Then they trotted back to the house.
Back in the ‘40s I would walk with our mailman, Harry, on his route some weekends. He always had dog treats as well. Time tested. Fond memories.
