black folk in NY and NJ love wearing their masks all the time but won’t get vaccinated at a high rate

This actually makes sense in an odd way.

The issue is not risk, it is the stakes.

In business this difference comes up all the time.

If you buy a stapler that does not work, the stakes are very low, so you might be willing to make an impulse purchase, buy what you saw advertised on TV, or what the person next to you uses...no deep analysis is needed.

I think masks fall into that category--they may work, they may not, no big deal--Covid is overhyped anyway.

The jab really raises the stakes.

If the jab is really dangerous (and you don't trust the white doctors or the Uncle Toms in the white jackets on PSAs), then you could get really sick or worse from them. Your default position is "no" and social pressure is not gonna move you. Without a very persuasive case from folks you fully trust, no jab, can't risk it.

The other think I have wondered about regarding the masks is the degree to which people are afraid they will have a cell phone picture of them snapped and they will be reported to HR for being unvaxxed and unmasked at a supermarket by their snitch co-worker.
