Is Hunting Season In Trouble?

The murderers in Chicago will find plenty of ammunition and guns. It's what they do.

I sold some of my reloading equipment on eBay earlier this year... a couple presses, quite a few molds, dies and other equipment. It was a little insane... none of it was available from the usual suppliers and mostly still is not. I assumed things would be getting back to normal for this stuff by now. But it has mostly gotten worse.

i heard the biden admin stopped the import of Russian ammo which accounts for 40% of the ammo sold in the US

sounds like a great business opportunity for a US based ammo manufacturer

thoughts?

I was recently in my first trap and skeet competition in about 40 years. The entire team was in charge of finding ammunition for the team. We all failed miserably for at least a couple of weeks.

Two days before the competition I located some at a large servicing store that wasn't too far away. It cost about 2.5 X what Federal would normally be. I bought enough for the team.

One of the other team members found some the day before that was just over 2 X Federal's normal price.

We both noticed neither store really had time to put the ammo on the shelves before it was gone.

These were target loads. I noticed the same among the usual ammo suspects for plugs, all buck variations, and birdshot.

The same is true with every handgun persuasion. Demand has outpaced supply.

I’ve seen more ammo available in the last couple months than I have in the past year before that.

And prices are down, too.

I have a rural king in my town. They have ammo but prices are crazy. The affordable stuff goes quick. Some is insane. We are talking they had a whole pallet of 22 LR but a box of 50 count was 8.99. They had to drop it to 6.99 to sell it. You can’t find .45 acp or LC. Plenty of 223 or 308 but crazy prices. Found a few boxes left of 9mm for 14.99. The rest was 23 bucks a box.

I have a couple of friends that could retire quite comfortably if they sold just half of the ammunition that that have acquired over the years at today’s prices.

But if most hunters are like the guys/gals I know, they are not experiencing any shortages..

I know how you can get almost unlimited ammo and for free: Just say you joined the Taliban, Biden will even throw you Blackhawk helicopters

And the dove population is incredibly low in parts of Texas now.

Over the years the Asian doves had displaced the Morning Doves, and they stayed here year round. Large birds. And there were also some White Wing Doves here.

After the Great Freeze last winter, it appears that most of the doves died in the freeze.

At the rate of one shot one kill I should have enough ammo for a few thousand hunting seasons....

Author's a couple of months behind the times. Ammo's back, much of it through new vendors attracted by the inflated prices that are going down even as we speak, but I bet they don't go all the way down to where they were before the drought. Shooters of Russian ammo are pretty ticked at Biden right now for banning its import but that's not predominantly hunting ammo and may work itself out before existing import licenses expire. (The ban is on new licenses).

Still, it's a new experience to be elated to see 9mm back under 40 cents a round for range ammo. Hunting was never really the biggest part of what is being purchased these days, which is a separate topic all by itself.

Just how much ammunition does anyone need for hunting season, anyway?

It depends on the type of game one's after.

I used to hunt deer in Michigan's Upper Penninsula. All I ever needed every year was two rounds of .308 That was enough to fill both tags I had and with a few exceptions over 30+ years, I filled both with two shots.

Now duck hunting is another matter entirely.

The bulk of production capacity is tied up with 9mm. .22 and 5.56.

Good luck finding .30-30, 30.06, .270, 7mm or .308.

There’s no money in them.
