Ammo Is Scarce And Prices Are Insane: Is Hunting Season In Trouble?
19FortyFive ^ | 9/3/2021 | Peter Suciu

“The ammunition problem isn’t new. It’s been a market factor for well over a year and is rooted in the extraordinarily high number of firearms that were sold over the past 18 months,” the trade lobby group for the firearms industry added. “Firearm sales skyrocketed starting in March 2020 and set an all-time high record that year, topping out at 21 million background checks for the sale of a gun. NSSF surveys revealed that 40 percent of those sales were for first-time gun buyers, an injection of over 8.4 million new owners. That pace hasn’t slowed, and through August of 2021 there were another 12.4 million background checks for gun sales, easily outpacing 2019 and 2018.”

Depends on what you are hunting. We have an annual ground squirrel hunt that easily takes out 1,000 in a 24 hour period.

And the dove population is incredibly low in parts of Texas now.

Over the years the Asian doves had displaced the Morning Doves, and they stayed here year round. Large birds. And there were also some White Wing Doves here.

After the Great Freeze last winter, it appears that most of the doves died in the freeze.

Everything but primers.

I reload and had pretty good supply. But it has been a year since I saw primers for sale.

Components are still tight too.

Ammo prices are high, because factoroies are making exotic loads. Maximizing the profit from available capacity.

And at the same time the ComDems want to disarm us. Not going to happen. Look at Australia, their home grown NAZI’s have gone totally insane since they are largely disarmed.

The odd shortage in firearms, is parts to repair them. Huge amounts of old seldom used rifles and pistols are being brought out and prepared for use. Personal protection is a serious issue. DC has gone Insane and has sold us out to foreign money. Dark clouds on the horizon.

At the rate of one shot one kill I should have enough ammo for a few thousand hunting seasons....

sounds like a great business opportunity for a US based ammo manufacturer

Domestic production is already running at max capacity.

Author's a couple of months behind the times. Ammo's back, much of it through new vendors attracted by the inflated prices that are going down even as we speak, but I bet they don't go all the way down to where they were before the drought. Shooters of Russian ammo are pretty ticked at Biden right now for banning its import but that's not predominantly hunting ammo and may work itself out before existing import licenses expire. (The ban is on new licenses).

Still, it's a new experience to be elated to see 9mm back under 40 cents a round for range ammo. Hunting was never really the biggest part of what is being purchased these days, which is a separate topic all by itself.

Just how much ammunition does anyone need for hunting season, anyway?

It depends on the type of game one's after.

I used to hunt deer in Michigan's Upper Penninsula. All I ever needed every year was two rounds of .308 That was enough to fill both tags I had and with a few exceptions over 30+ years, I filled both with two shots.

Now duck hunting is another matter entirely.

A friend asked me “Where is the best place to get Ammo?”
My reply “ Your Basement!”

Five bullets would be enough for most hunters per season. It isn’t about hunting.

You make my point. Hunters don’t need very much ammo per season and they’re stocked up.

“Is hunting season in trouble”? No.

The bulk of production capacity is tied up with 9mm. .22 and 5.56.

Good luck finding .30-30, 30.06, .270, 7mm or .308.

There’s no money in them.

No longer any shortage in east Texas. At least not for the most popular calibers...

The supply is still limited, and just a few calibers. I looked today, the local academy didn’t have any new stuff except for a few cases of 9mm. They have been keeping 5.56 and .223 fairly constantly the past 2 months, 9mm usually and some .40. A few .45acp show up now and then and I even got a couple of boxes of .380 not long ago.

I’ve seen almost no .38 and .357 at all, not much .45 acp, no other pistol calibers, just 9mm, .40 and a few .380 here and there.

Today that was about it, most of the norma .22LR are gone and that was 10 bucks for 50. No thanks, I still have plenty .22 LR that I got at half that price, and it still shows up now and then cheaper than that. Also actually got some CCI Stingers a few weeks ago. No 22 mag lately.

Rifle - They had a few .308 last week, and some 30-06 not long ago but not much, not sure what price are I haven’t been checking prices on rifle ammo. Last time I saw any .243, which is what I need, it was way expensive, somewhere around 30 bucks for 20 rounds. No thanks. Last box I bought was $17 I think. Plenty 5.56 and .223.

Plenty shotgun shells, mostly small game loads and some target loads. They have some #3 steel for ducks, a lot of #6 and 7.5, no buckshot and a few 12 ga 3 inch slugs. Academy has pallets of cases in the middle of the aisle, various shotgun shells, I didn’t look too close but mostly 12 gauge #6 and 7.5 I think.

Some 20 gauge too but not as much, some cases available too, nothing at all for my 16 gauge, but then all I want to find is some more buckshot. I have 3 or 4 boxes of small game loads if I need it, which is highly doubtful. Mostly #5 and 6.

Only time I’ve shot the 16 ga in the past 15 years is a few months back when I got a new full choke barrel and did a couple of test shots. Winchester model 1200 pump. Previously had the modified choke barrel it’s had since it was made in 1964. Still gets cleaned and oiled twice a year though...

Everybody keeps repeating "40% of the ammunition sold in the US" but that sounds suspect to me. I've no doubt it is a significant percentage and easily half (or more) of certain specific calibers, but over a third of ALL ammo sold in the US? Is there a definitive source for that, not just everyone repeating what they've heard?
