Everybody keeps repeating "40% of the ammunition sold in the US" but that sounds suspect to me. I've no doubt it is a significant percentage and easily half (or more) of certain specific calibers, but over a third of ALL ammo sold in the US? Is there a definitive source for that, not just everyone repeating what they've heard?

It’s what I’ve heard. At first glance, it seemed odd for us to no longer be making most of our ammo. But with the libs doing what they can to shutdown the industry, I wouldn’t doubt it
