Texas Constitutional Carry Starts Sept. 1

The Lone Star State on Wednesday officially becomes the 21st-- and largest-- state to recognize that only the Constitution, not a permit, is needed to be able to legally carry a handgun.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in June signed seven pro-gun bills into law, sent to his desk by the state's Republican-controlled legislature. Among these measures was House Bill 1927, which recognizes that a state-issued license isn't required to legally carry a concealed handgun in Texas.

The move keeps the state's popular carry permit process in place for those who elect to obtain one for reciprocity purposes in other states. The current fee for Texas Concealed Handgun License is $40 on both initial applications as well as renewals and requires six hours of training by one of 3,800 state-approved firearms instructors. As of the end of 2020, there were 1,626,242 active licenses in Texas, according to statistics from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Some 21 states recognize permitless carry laws, with 20 of those adopting such practices just in the past two decades. (Chart: Guns.com)

The Dems will step up their efforts to settled Afghan refugees into Texas in order to turn it blue.

I’ll probably still keep getting my permit renewed for “reciprocity” sake, but when are courts going to address the unconstitutionality of that? A constitutional right is nationwide, like “gay marriage.”

Congratulations Texas. I recommend that the advocates for carry actually do so in order to train the public to not panic at the site of a firearm / armed citizen.

Congratulations Texas. I recommend that the advocates for carry actually do so in order to train the public to not panic at the site of a firearm / armed citizen.

That won't be easy as many who will be carrying don't have the ability or sense to pour p!ss from a boot. The new carry laws have some caveats and many I talk to still don't know what they are.

I understand and it does take time. Here in Colorado, it took a couple of years for people to not call the cops just because someone had a holstered firearm. There is still the occasional freak out but it is much calmer now.

I just renewed my Texas CCW. Good until 2027. Wonder if anything is going to change with that? The main reason I renewed is that it is good in most other states.

If we can get 16 more states on board then we could propose a Constitutional Amendment or something!

I’m an engineer. You’d think folk folks with math/ physics/science degrees ought to be able to put their shoes on the proper foot too. You’d be surprised. But they have licenses.

Don’t mistake credentials for ability.

Rights don’t require permission or approval to be exercised.

However, a wise person studies and practices for the task at hand.
