Ah, who does my little friend, who does?
Unlike the rhetorical phrase popularized after 9/11 - “If we (fill-in-the-blank), the terrorists have won” – the terrorists actually have won. When your enemy was the one who spent their blood and treasure and they withdraw leaving you with the spoils of war is there any doubt who won?
So for now we live in an age of ambient anxiety. We can no longer trust anyone: not academics, nor scientists, media of all sorts, journalists or industry. And certainly not elite politicians. We can’t even truly trust our own research as every search engine uses algorithms which by their nature are untrustworthy; and when designed to be biased are even more so. If you think you know the truth I would venture you only know the half of it.
Therefore I am just going to rest awhile, regroup and wait for my gyroscope to re-calibrate. Come, sit with me awhile.
For summer is brief and we must remain strong enough to make it through another long winter.

“We can no longer trust anyone”
None of the gov’t bureaucracies, whether local, state, or federal, anyway. Only a small circle of friends.
I have to say nothing that has happened in Afghanistan has surprised me. It’s difficult to quantify how I feel, not just about the debacle in Afghanistan, but the stream of lies from government agencies, the White House, and the media. Embarrassment is quite right, as that includes an element of what I have done and I had nothing to do with any of this. The feeling is too long in developing and can’t be sustained anger, as I learned to cut off sustained anger decades ago as self destructive. It’s as though I’m in a constant eye-roll; at the astonishing news from Afghanistan, the mask Karens, the lying government officials, “critical race theory,” etc. Frustration, I suppose.
Resignation to the inevitable.
It happens at the end of empires.
Only a small circle of friends.
And not even all of them, sadly. I have guys I’ve known, hung out with, been to weddings, funerals and such with for over 40 years and one of them decided I was a troglodyte (not his words, but I’m no longer a friend; like not just FB, but everything; don’t call, he’s out of the lottery pool for the 10 of us...
I dumped 10 friends of 40 years because it had to be done.
