“US programs gave “trainings to 1,105 Afghan men in which they could discuss their own gender roles and examine male attitudes that are harmful to women.” One initiative was called the “National Masculinity Alliance”.”
“...the lack of a Dari and Pashto translation for “gender equality”.”
The article is a PERFECT EXAMPLE of the need to keep women away from positions of power. About the only exception that I would agree to is if the woman is a Republican (RINO, most likely, because we are talking about...well, women) and the alternative is a Democrat.
If we were REALLY trying to win over ‘hearts and minds’, it probably would have been a bit helpful to consider the ‘hearts of minds’ of the men there, since they had OPTIONS (like joining the Taliban to put a stop to this crap).
Maybe they believe that sanity will eventually prevail -- ?
What a travesty.
When it comes to Afghanistan there is a refusal not only by the media and the so called (in name only) democratic party but by Christian leaders like Pope Francis to approach redressing the Taliban for it being a theocracy following the sharia creed which denies free will and is authorized by Our Creator to execute non believers.
In the 60s before the ouster of King Mohammed Zahir Shah women in Kabul were free to wear western clothes, go to university and pursue professional careers. The king outlawed honor killings of wayward daughters. But that was in the capital and other large cities. Out in the countryside, where the mullahs reigned it was very different. And when they took over the country women in the cities were treated just like women in the country.
A view of Afghanistan from 40 years ago.

Afghansistan was pretty modern between the mid-50s, 60s and 70s. Only when the Taliban took over did the country backslide.
Women loved their freedoms and ability to go to school and dress fashionable.
No, I have to disagree. We were in Afghanistan for 20 years. We trained and equipped an Afghan Army that was 180,000 strong, double the Taliban strength. We gave them all of the tools necessary to fight for their own freedom, but at the first chance they had to actually fend for themselves, the Afghan Army and Government turned tail and ran.
The Taliban didn't do that, the Afghan people did. If the majority of Afghans wanted freedom instead of Theocratic rule, they had every means to fight for it. They did not.
Screw 'em.
Next up: How feminism failed in the USA. , etc.
One thing the Russians, the British and the Americans all miscalculated was the tribal and ethnic makeup of the country.
It has been so corrupt at every level for centuries that it will probably never change.
Womyns studies in Kabul. And it didn’t work out you say.
Unexpected.
Amazing photos. It appears Afghanistan was much better off under King Mohammed Zahir Shah.
