I suspect she was hoping last year's scheduled olympics was going to be her last but since it was canceled she had to force herself thru another year of training and competition.
I think she's just plain burned out........
A good friend's grandson was an all state baseball player who was offered scholarships to both U. of Michigan and MSU but he turned them down and gave up the game when he graduated high school.
His teenage years were constant travel teams and tournaments that burned him out.
I see this a lot.
Kids started in sports and travel teams from age 4 on. They lose their drive in high-school which is exactly when they need sports to help them take the edge off.
Best time to start sports for most kids is 9 or 10. Even 11 or 12. But we don’t have the infrastructure to support that.
My son started playing competitive baseball around age 9, but it was mostly all-stars back then, then he played travel ball between ages 12-15. His goal was always to play high school varsity, not college ball. He had several friends who played college ball and it was too much pressure.
He did end up playing JV and Varsity but covid hit his senior year. He had a zero ERA up to halfway through the season, and pitched a no hitter against their biggest rival, and the team earned a spot in the state playoffs. Then the season was cancelled due to covid. He was so disappointed.
He loved baseball, but he never wanted it to be a grind. Sometimes he felt like playing travel over the summer, sometimes he chose to spend his summers doing other things. We just went with it. He misses it some now, especially since those guys were robbed of their senior year
Article was full of “self” and “myself”. She’s committed a sports sin, allowed others to mess with her head.
We’re now a world of naval gazers. Introspection rules. Objectivity is out, it’s all subjectivity. Didn’t she enter the Olympics to support her country? Oh deary me!
I DO sympathize with her past: what she went thru was horrendous. Her withdrawal, however is crippling a team that counted on her. Someone else could have been chosen in her stead. We'll see: if she remains to compete in the individual events, I would say the criticism is warranted.
When she stumbled in the olympics. If she was having these issues she should have never been on the team to begin with. Imagine a Navy Seal under real pressure walking away on a mission.
Recall she made a leotard with GOAT on it. She’d embraced all of this social media business.
You don’t make that call AT the olympics.
She had me until this quote from the article: The athlete said that her coaches completely supported her decision, explaining that they saw that she “was going through it and they totally agreed it was not worth getting hurt over something so silly.” SOMETHING SO SILLY?!?
I don’t judge a soldier’s actions during combat, I don’t judge a policeman’s actions during a threatening situation, and I don’t judge these young athletes’ reaction in the unreal environment they’re in.
She choked and quit. It’s that simple. She is no athlete if she didn’t even try. Her teammates rallied without her and moved on. She sucks.
“Simone Biles Did Nothing Wrong!”?
How many millions has the United States Olympic committee, spent on her training only to have her say meh?
Nothing wrong? huh!
She is a quitter and now will be always known as such. When the chips were down she melted like a snowflake. She failed at courage, perseverance, fidelity, loyalty, patriotism and the Olympic spirit. Now she is making excuses.
Simone Biles did a lot for all of us, and has been a good role model, engaged in charitable work, and kept a smile up a long time. She deserves gratitude and respect. Thank you Ms Biles.
You should learn to capitalize on your opportunities.
She proclaimed herself a GOAT (Greatest Of All Time), as witnessed by the embroidery on her leotards leading up to the Olympics. She had a bad day at work in front of the whole world on a stage she was supposed to dominate. Suddenly, her mental health challenges manifest themselves, and she quits. You can believe anything about her you want. Those 3 things are undeniable, and quitting is NOT the way GOATs behave. By quitting the way she did, she deserves derision for her hubris.
Never heard of her! Who gives a shit?
Exactly. The point being, she should have withdrawn before the qualifying rounds and save us the drama.
I don’t know why any woman would want to be a gymnast. They starve them and work them like street hoes. No wonder they have mental breakdowns.
I can’t disagree with the premise of this article. I saw something the other day about the judges changing the judging parameters for her and her alone because she’s so much better than the competition.
Equity and stuff.
So if the deck is purposely stacked against her, it make is a whole lot easier to just tell them to stuff it.
I think had she done that instead of blaming nebulous mental issues it would have gone much farther and she’s have the full support of most real americans.
