If California goes independent and FedGov allows it or reacts slowly. California will be free to make foreign alliances as does any nation state. It will need allies, it will need any ally that can potentially protect it from its powerful neighbor - USA. Do you think Mexico would be a good choice ? Canada maybe ? Cuba ? How about Guatemala ? There’s only one choice - the PRC ! Would the PRC park naval assets in California? Probably not but they might ! More likely the assets would be Chinese Special Forces & Intel to set up sites in the Rockies. There’s no huge equipment footprint needed here. Not at first, once you consolidate then maybe. In the beginning you can fly in the personnel and most of the equipment needed commercially. Then start training the former California National Guard to be a reliable obedient regime protection force for California regime. Then start destabilizing the US states bordering California.
If I was in charge of an independent California that’s what I would do. If I was Beijing it’s what I would do.

Based upon what criteria? If the marker is income to debt ratio, then California doesn’t look so good.

which means major public works piping and pumping systems from the mountains 100 or 200 miles distant, plus reservoirs nearer the water consumers
okay on that. but none have been built in half a century while the state’s population tripled
thus, the state continues to have “droughts”.... there’s almost always plenty of available water or snow in the mountains... but the politicians have not seen fit to bring any more of it to the people who need it in so long... we call this mess “Politically-Created Droughts”

BTW, as for droughts, you can expect droughts for the foreseeable future with all the timberlands being burned.
Those forests cool the ground. After they are burned, they no longer cool the ground and expect dry and hot climate. What will happen is there will be very little snowpack created in the winter. The summer will continue to be even more hot and more dry creating even more fires.
Oh it will take a while, but it will happen.

I doubt that will happen...instead they simply disable charging of electric cars whenever the wind don’t blow, and since most people buy electric cars to hold their noses up at others, rather than drive them, they won’t even notice the lack of charging.

Thinking the most likely scenario is that no one will buy California. What will happen is the homeless will simply occupy the deserted properties and take them over. The state will devolve into a Mad Max world. The rich will further entrench themselves behind walls and armed guards. Should be a great place 😝….
China will likely move in and occupy CA — They especially like the ports which have the potential for many uses.
The communists don’t want people to have cars because that gives them independence. This is just a sneaky way of taking away the cars. Force people into electric cars, and take away the electricity. And, of course, blame everything on President Trump.

Wrong. According to Forbes: “There are 13 states whose net positions are negative, meaning, they have more total liabilities and deferred inflows of resources than they do total assets and deferred outflows of resources. In absolute numbers, California is the state with the most debt with $362.87 billion in total liabilities in 2019. However, with total assets worth $301.1 billion, California’s net position is better than some states with less debt.”
Thus, you see that California’s debt (liabilities) is greater than its assets. That means California “is in the fiscal hole.”

Forbes is adding pension debt to the mix, which may or may not be appropriate.
CA spun off all pensions to Calpers, a semi=private corporation.
By the Forbes measure, the USA is about $200 trillion in debt as it includes all retiree and SS/Medicare obligations.
As for BOND debt, the state has about $150bil outstanding. That’s the only debt that could generate default.

CalPers manages the obligations, but it did not assume the obligations. The obligations rest solely with the state of California.

Then that must mean that CalPers assets are state assets. And they are $444bil.
Additionally, there is CalStrs for state teachers. Their assets are $284bil. And they should be included as state assets.
They ruin EVERYTHING they touch.
Why anyone would willingly vote for them is beyond me.
