I am interested in buying a .22 pistol for carry and target shooting. I have been looking at the Beretta M9 22, but recently was impressed with a Taurus model.
Any recommendations? Any ones to stay away from?
Agree, the Ruger SR22 eats everything IVe run thru it. Only problems have been caused by the ammo.
I agree with you 100%.
+ however many it takes to get you to take Husker24's recommendation. IF you're shooting at targets. Don't even look at the other guns.
For self defense, like everybody else on this thread says, get a .380 or 9mm.
Nice 1911-style .22
Best of all, it is much less expensive to get a lot of practice in.
My personal favorite is the the Walther PPK/S in .22LR, the Made in Germany version: very accurate despite the short sight radius, dependable and safe to carry and quite concealable. Expensive, but what's your personal safety worth?
Look at the Tandemkross Halo charging ring if you're using it for target shooting. There are videos online for that as well.
You also have options for swapping out the grips.
I don’t have a .22 but I’d stay away from Hi-point. Known of several people who have had feed issues with theirs. That said I did have feed issues with my Ruger 9mm in the past. I purchased new cartridges and now leave them filled minus 1. No problems since.
My recommendation would be to go at least the 9mm route. My Sig p365 is a great carry gun. I highly recommend it.
Check gun shows for older S & W revolvers.
They never fail.
The mafia hit men press the 22 to the back of the neck/head when the victim has their hands secured behind their back.
If you call this a reason to carry a 22 for self protection, I question your logic and reasoning skills.
And what the hell is "social application"?
What do you carry?
I'd never carry anything less than a 38 and a 357 Magnum is always in my vehicle within the easy reach of the console.
I never have my vehicle guns under the seat or in the glove box where it is too difficult to have quick access.
If you can't get at it quickly, it may be too late for you to even respond to a "social application".
Yes .22 is a poor defense round but it’s better than a sharp stick. I bought my wife the Browning 1911-22. Nice little gun that’s a miniature of a “real” 1911.
If I were carrying a pistol in combat, I'd use a 1911A1 in .45. If I am carrying something concealable, I'd carry my PPK in .380. Remember, this means "carry", as in "hidden out of sight on your person". A .357 is just a tad too large and bulky and obvious.
The .22 PPK/S I have is used when I'm training new shooters and sometimes for concealed carry. It's accurate and fast recovering, so putting several shots into a small group is fast and easy. It's also lighter and the slide is retracted more easily than the .380. Don't write off the .22LR: it's all soft lead, so it deforms immediately and makes a wound channel completely out of proportion to its diminutive size. Remember that a hit with a .22 is far superior to a miss with a .357.
PPKs are the most dependable and safely carried weapons out there - so I wouldn't dismiss the idea so quickly.
For practical carry, Smith M&P Compact .22
For nail driving accuracy potential, Ruger Mark IV.
I suggest the Smith though.
I already have all the other recommendations. I have no .22. I wanted FReeper input on this area, because you guys KNOW guns.
I was a juror in a trial involving a man who murdered with a .22. He didn’t restrain them at first. My logic and reasoning skills took in that knowledge.
I already have all the other recommendations. Thank You.
The feed problems are what my studies have revealed concern me. The Beretta M9_22 seems to not have that problem, based on YouTube postings.
Many thanks for the info on the ammo.
They make a 22 version as well as the 9mm
I bought a TX22 a year ago, and it was great. I love the form factor -- makes a great training tool for larger guns like the Glock 19. Light, points well, goes 300+ rounds between cleaning (most .22lrs are half of that), and sixteen rounds per mag over the traditional ten is mighty handy. So I bought another in December, and this second one has the bullets hitting the target sideways every three to four shots with a variety of ammo... at 7 yards!
I am currently in the processes of returning this to Taurus to get it fixed; we will see how that turns out.
You could get a Glock 19 for carrying, and get a .22 conversion kit for practice.

It always turns into a pissing contest. I carry a 9mm but would like to find a small dependable.22 for light carry when the situation calls for it.
Of course you will hear the “you will only make them mad with a .22” argument. Just be sure you can make them mad around 7-10 times.
I just recently bought a Ruger SR22. Affordable and great shooting gun.
