Looking for a .22 pistol
Free Republic ^ | 7-14-2021 | Loud Mime

I am interested in buying a .22 pistol for carry and target shooting. I have been looking at the Beretta M9 22, but recently was impressed with a Taurus model.

Any recommendations? Any ones to stay away from?

I guess a Ruger Mark IV with 10” barrel and a 3X scope is out of the question?

I’m curious: Why did you choose caliber?

I like my Buckmark. It is very accurate and is reliable.

I agree 9mm is minimum for self defence, but a .22 in the brain pan works on deer and should work on a perp. I suppose I might be nervous in a pinch and be an inch off, but my Buckmark is easy to hit a quarter at 10-20 feet. If I was going to arm myself it would be with a .45 and aiming would be within 6 inches at 20 ft. I would rather have a .22 than a baseball bat though.

Just got a Phoenix Arms HP22A. Fits in a back levi pocket. It has a hammer and that was a requirement for me. It is very much like a mini 1911. It is heavy though. Has dual safeties, pick the one you want. I haven’t got a chance to shoot it yet. I’m gunsmithing an old Sterling arms 302 right now. I’m not a fan of plastic guns.

When you practice with your Rugar SR22 try the ‘milk jugs at ten yards’ drill, ‘cause you are gonna want to make hedshots with such a small caliber. And if you have to pull the wepon for closer quarters, direct your rounds to the lower pelvic region ... lots of large blood vessels and a bladder down there, which when hit with any caliber is so very exquisitely painful and will drop any sized man of ghettopotamus. Once on the ground a dispatching shot is easier to make.

My “rimfire”days stopped somewhere between my BB-gun and now.

You’d be better off throwing a rock at them! If you give me the choice between a .25 and a stick, I’ll take the stick and let YOU have the .25. I’m NOT even wild about the whole nonsense about the .320.

Apparently.. you and I are in somewhat the same “league”. 9mm hollow point will take care of the “problem”!

By the way I read that the 22M defense round has the stopping power of a .357. Just fyi.

You read that in the Babylon Bee, right? Don't believe it.

The .22 is not a good carry gun. Is there a reason you’ve settled on that caliber? Virtually no expert would recommend a .22 as a carry gun. If you’re looking for small, look at the Ruger LCP Max. .380 with a 10 round magazine. Still small enough for pocket carry. .380 is as small as I’d ever go for a defensive pistol. Right now I carry a Glock 23, which fires a .40 S&W round, but I’m in the process of transitioning to a 9mm Glock 43X MOS. While that’s still a belt holster pistol, I’m trading in my Ruger LCP (6+1) for the Ruger LCP Max, which is 10+1.

Because .22 is rimfire, it is prone to misfire (duds). For this reason, a revolver is more reliable than a semi-automatic. If you get a dud in a revolver, you simply pull the trigger again to fire the next bullet.

Smith & Wesson makes a MODEL 617 revolver that holds 10 rounds. A .380 or 9mm is a better defense option for most people, but if you must have a .22, then this may be the best option.

For a bigger revolver that is still relatively gentle, consider the Smith & Wesson Model 10 .38 Special revolver. This is the gun used by the skipper on the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland. It is a classic.

Recently changed my "Truck Gun" to a KelTec PMR 30, mainly for the 30 round capacity. It is a 22 Mag.

But 22 is not a wise carry caliber. Not to stake your life on.
