“Maybe Earth is just a stopover or distrubution center for them. Maybe they don’t really care about us one way or another, just as we don’t care much about ants.”

Human institutions spend fortunes paying for scientists to travel thousands of miles in order to study things like insects in their native habitats. It could be both, we are ants to them and they still have a few rich weirdos who care about ants enough to make the effort to come and check out the new bug.
