Philippine authorities have begun to evacuate thousands of people Thursday after the alert status for Taal volcano, located near capital Manila, was raised following a “magmatic intrusion.”
“At 3:16 p.m., the Taal volcano’s main crater generated a short-lived dark phreatomagmatic plume 1 km-high with no accompanying volcanic earthquake,” the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in a statement.

The seismology agency raised the alert level for Taal from 2 to 3 after a .62 mile-high plume of gas and steam was ejected into the atmosphere.
“This means that there is a magmatic intrusion at the main crater that may further drive succeeding eruptions,” the agency warned.
The seismology agency said the towns of Agoncillo and Laurel, situated near Taal, are in possible danger.
Mark Timbal, a spokesman for the government’s disaster-response agency, said thousands of residents have already begun to evacuate from five high-risk villages. He said up to 14,000 people may have to evacuate today.
Taal erupted in January last year, displacing 380,000 people and destroyed homes, roads, farms, and vital infrastructure. It’s one of the Philippines’ more active volcanoes.
The magmatic unrest could suggest more activity at Taal is ahead.
Next alert level up (4) is “Hazardous Eruption Imminent”. 5 is in progress.
I have extended family staying in Tagaytay, on the northern rim of Lake Taal, which is the lake surrounding the volcanic isle formed by Taal the volcano.
Phreatic means “water containing”. Also effected by the composition of the magma, phreatic explosions are the most violent.
Humm. Based on your picture volcanic eruptions are a fairly regular thing on this island.

Are they going to leave?
The ongoing “lockdowns” will be of some concern.
They do have family in Manila, in an area that still has more lockdown restrictions, and higher % of cases than Tagaytay, so I am not sure where exactly they will go if Tagaytay must be evacuated.
We are thinking about an 8 pm tonite zoom call, which will be 8 am Friday their time.

Your right. The Caldera is bigger than the lake. It’s a volcano, wrapped up by a lake, inside a caldera. It’s just one of 24 volcanoes in the PI. Time to move away!

A nearby volcanic eruption can flat out ruin your day. A friend of mine was killed by Mt. St. Helens in 1980 trying to outrun the pyroclastic flow in his Jeep but didn’t make it. His body was recovered from the wrecked and half buried vehicle. He was in his 20’s.

First concert I ever went to was in Manila, Peter And Gordon in 1966.
