The Great Ammo Shortage (And Price Spike) Of 2021: When Will It End?

Anyone looking to “load up” or even to replenish their supply of ammunition will likely have to remain patient – at least for a while longer.

The “great ammo shortage” that began last year isn’t going to end anytime soon, and according to market research conducted by Southwick Associates shortages of ammunition will continue throughout the rest of 2021.

Why an Ammo Shortage?

If you’re finding it hard to purchase ammunition right now, you’re not alone and that is a reminder of the basic supply and demand problem. Demand simply continues to outpace supply – even as some of the leading manufacturers have ramped up production, with some factories running around the clock. One issue is that consumers buy what little ammunition hits the shelves out of fear, and Southwick Associates warned, “The frenzied purchasing often feeds further increases in demand.”

I’ve noticed that there has been an influx of foreign steel case ammo the last couple of weeks.

Another good reason to own big bore repeating pellet rifles, and by big bore, I mean calibers that can take down cape Buffalo. But of course you’ll need a source of air for refills, but you can hey up to .30 cal that don’t need outside source of air that will stil. Take down animals as large as elk if you bet a good shot, but that is kind of pushing it. They will easily take Down coyotes though and even wild pigs. Heck, they even have full auto air rifles with 18 rounds.

No regulations at all except for hunting, has to be a certain. Caliber I. Most states, and not all animals can be hunted with them in a few states I guess.

Ammo is fairly cheap, and available, especially for lower calbers like .22, .25, .30

Wish it would end. Bought a gun a while back and have no ammo for it. Not paying double the price for it.

Now we know why they want all the lead out of everything.
Soon you will be required to have a license to own lead, to store lead in any form and to sell lead.................................

Manufacturers haven't decided to gamble and invest in capital and labor to expand operations; buildings, machinery, and staff. It's a huge risk.

In addition to a future drop in demand, each additional round of ammo they produce lowers the sale price of other rounds.

I wonder if they could issue bonds that listed the equipment as collateral. I also wonder if they could finance expansion by taking enough advance orders with payment up front.

There's an opportunity for a subscription service where buyers could pass along their ammunition to someone who intends to shoot it, in exchange for newly produced ammo. That way long-term hoarders can rotate their inventory instead of having all this inventory age at the same rate.

Cash in while the stupid Americans hoard it, I don’t blame them at all.
Places like Midway USA or Cheaper Than Dirt got stupid with their prices and I’m not soon to forget it while others didn’t.
I wanted a box of Underwood Ammo .45-70, they doubled it in price damn near but Underwood had the rounds I wanted in stock on their own site for only about a modest 10% increase from my last purchase. You know Midway is getting them in bulk and already discounted as a reseller, so tacking on that much on top of it is enough that I won’t buy from them again because of it.

It appears things are getting better at least from availability standpoint. Price hasn’t dropped yet but definitely finding more ammo on the shelves these days.

It’s not just ammo. Primers, especially small rifle primers, are almost impossible to find. Same with lots of powder.

I am seeing some price drops. It is still high but they have decreased from their peak based on Ammo Seek.

Perceived shortages precipitate hoarding, which precipitates real shortages, which leads to more hoarding. Only a real or perceived glut in the market will break the cycle. By the time that happens, gun owners will be up to their eyebrows in ammunition.

AK47 ammo has been coming down steadily, and is great ammo! And certainly worth buying now!

During the Obama days you simply could not get .22LR. .223 was very scarce as well. It was supposedly due to demand and ammo makers claimed they were running around the clock.

I keep getting notices from many Online Suppliers like:
Ammunition Depot, Ammoland, MidwayUSA, Sportsman’s Warehouse, CTD (Cheaper than Dirt) and such.

Tolerable Prices, considering all the variables.

Reloading stuff is still screwed due to Primers and Powders still being that Rare Earth Element called UNOBTAINEUM and FREEDIUM1776 caused by POLITICUS IDIOTICUS.

I still want to know where All the gazillion rounds of Ammo bought by the zer0 admin and We the People PAID FOR IT is stashed.
