If I kill a big ant on my patio, a bunch of little ants appear and carry it away

Posted on 05/20/2021 3:23:02 PM PDT by SamAdams76

It was so good to go to my supermarket this afternoon and see several people with no masks. Finally, we are dispensing with this nonsense. This was in Danbury, CT.

Anyway, it's pretty amazing how much weight (relative to their own weight) that little ants can carry.

It's just the weirdest thing.

When I smash a big ant on my patio, suddenly a bunch of little ants surround it and carry it away. To where, I have no idea. But they are taking it someplace and they evidently have a purpose. They are quite organized. I often wonder what goes on inside their little brains.

It's almost like the little ants serve as undertakers for the bigger ants.

Sometimes this one tiny ant is carrying this humongous large ant all by itself. You should try it and see for yourself.

An apartment I lived in(CA)was like that. One minute nothing, a little while later hundreds of ants in a line, either in the kitchen or bathroom. One time I killed a whole bunch but didn’t have time to clean-up the carnage as I was off to work. When I got home they were all gone.

Ants have trails - sort of like highways - that they travel by smell. If you run your finger across their trail, you remove the smell and the ants coming up to it get confused and start jerking back and forth sideways looking to pick up the smell the trail.

After a period of time, they are able to figure it out and re-establish the trail.

Who are you? I thought all the thread monitor monkeys were laid off due to the covid?

But then again, if you're still stuck in New Orleans then well..........your sister likely moved away and you're lonely.

Really? Are you kidding me? Are they going to dress it up in a 3-piece suit and apply make-up so that it looks good in the box, too?

Criminy, they’re going to f’ing EAT the larger ant. They would do the same to you and I, or to an elephant, if they had the chance. That’s what living creatures do, they eat, many times even their own kind (though I am quite happy that most of humanity over most of the last couple tens of thousands of years, has frowned upon that practice - and, yeah, that’s at least partially based on not a little bit of self-interest).

Are you sure that you grew up on this planet?

Good, but carpenter ants don’t eat wood, they mine in it for a place to lay eggs. This is why they go into the house and move in the walls. Carpenter ants feed primarily on insect honeydew, plant and fruit juices, insects and other arthropods. Inside, they will also feed on sweets, eggs, meats, cakes and grease. The workers will forage up to 300 feet from their nest and you could have multiple nests in your home. The best way to get rid of them is by using dursban wp. But the government restricted its use in 1996 due to possible problems with children exposure. Dursban is an organophospate insecticide and a member of a class of chemicals developed during World War II to attack the nervous system.

A professional can use it by drilling a hole in the walls ever 13 inches and spraying the wp in. WP stands for wettable powder which means it sprays in as a liquid, dries to a powder, and foraging ants find it, eat it and get it on them, and then return to the nest where the regurgitate it for other ants to include small ones called minors to consume. They die and the new ones in eggs hatching won’t have any to help them and they will die. Otherwise you will have to tent the building and that can run some big dollars as left alone, they will cause a lot of damage tearing up your foundation and struts. If you see dead or live ones in or around the house, they are there and will find a way in. Look, also, for fine sawdust in window sills or baseboards as that is called frass and means they are tearing up wood. Good luck.

I could tell you a lot more about carpenter ants as they amaze me with their ability to survive and recognize nest needs somehow. We humans should do as well. And to my knowledge, when a dead ant is retrieved, no one knows what happens to it. If two nests in the walls have a war, at some point they stop and retrieve their dead like you mentioned. After that, a lot of speculation.

We need our regular doses of surrealism from Mr. Sam Adams 76. He is the Rene Magritte of Free Republic.

I don’t have ants in my house. But one day I was on my screened in porch eating something and I dropped a piece, I came back four hours later and it was crawling with tiny ants so I came to the conclusion that we have ants there just underneath the surface waiting to pounce.

I swear, if you dropped a bread crumb on Mt. Everest, ants would swarm it in a few short hours.

I grew up on a planet called Flambingola (phonetically spelled for this language) but I’m getting used to this planet day by day. It does have its charms.
