FWIW, if it were up to me, I’d abolish hate crime as a charge. It’s too subjective and subject to abuse.

Absolutely true. That is really the whole motivation for the enactment of “hate crime” laws in the first place. Regarding this act of heinous barbarism (and others like it), in any truly civilized country the perpetrator(s) would be tried, convicted, sentenced to death, and publicly executed within a week of their apprehension. No testimony regarding “motive” would be admissible at trial, and there would be no right to appeal.
Agreed. Time to go medieval on human garbage like this. Turn him over to the victims family & friends - no questions asked, no legal repercussions. You do something like murder an innocent kid, that is simply unforgivable by the human race and you are removed from it.

Last night, the distant surveillance footage of a man (white) trying to kidnap a Florida girl made the ABC nightly news.
No mention of a (black) man taking a sleeping 4 year old white boy from his bed, killing him and dumping him in the street, even with high quality video available.
Justice needs to be administered for what people do, not what they feel or think.
I think applying Occam's Razor might be a good start.
