Boy, I’ve played this scenario a dozen times in my head.

If you’re a woman, and you pull your pistol out in this situation, no one is going to question you, but in this case, the guy is going to be arrested, plus, what if two or three of these jokers rushed him from all sides, confiscated the weapon then shot him or he shot them?

IOWs, when I play this out in my mind, the only solution, is to get up immediately, and leave.

If they follow you to your car, or touch you, then you pull out the weapon.

Sooner or later however, someone is going to get hurt.

BUT THINK ABOUT THIS.

No doubt these losers are going to talk about the “what if” this happens again. What will they do especially if they find out that the guy was arrested?

Here’s what might happen.

1. They decide that if someone pulls a weapon on them, THEY IMMEDIATELY JUMP THE GUY AND GRAB THE WEAPON.
2. If they are not able to get the weapon, they leave.
3. If they are able to confiscate the weapon, they shoot they guy.
4. Or, they come themselves with a concealed weapon.

In short, this is a no win situation for pulling your gun in that instance if you are a man.

Or option 4, if they attempt to rush you, you shoot them.....

Young thugs attacking an elderly man is considered an allowed deadly force incident in most states...

The protesters were armed and open carrying. They were being aggressive and disruptive.

You are correct that one option would be to depart, if they would let you do so.

Another option would be to stand your ground, in defense of yourself, family, or other present innocents.

It is taught in CCW classes that sometimes all it takes to deter a threat or attack is presenting the gun. So that is also an option, and if one felt fear of bodily harm would be warranted, but it also has risks all its own.

I would be most concerned about where the muzzle was pointed while he was 'assessing' the changing circumstances in front of him. If he felt the threat was enough to present the gun but not enough to justify shooting, then a 'sul' ready position might have been smarter, keeping the gun pointed down while very ready to point in if necessary.

Other than that, I think the old adage applies...

Yes, real men sit there and take a beating and watch their women get raped by a gang of animals, don't they. /s

I can't really see that happening where you live. You ain't from around those parts, is you? I was expecting someone from Mass or NY from your post.
