I agree that most combat occurs at 21 ft or less, but no one ought to think “oh, crap, this lethal threat is at 60 feet, I’m screwed”.

Of course, we need to be thinking “get off line and to cover” not “what range are the incoming rounds being fired at me from?”

I recommend training at varying distances and often from further than one is comfortable with. Certainly not from exposed and stationary, but moving off line and to cover. It gets harder when everything is moving and that’s how gunfights progress.

Watch a few cop videos, it is very dynamic and often it is good guy with a puny pistol dealing with a bad guy and a rifle.

Thanks for your service.

Your reasonig is spot on. May I add that a laser on a pistol can come in handy when shooting fronm cover ... reach out away from body, point laser and fire without having to be behind the gun. And my old eyes need that colored dot out there, so I csan shoot from low ready position if indoors.

Too reasonable. Politicians cannot comprehend such reasonableness.

“oh, crap, this lethal threat is at 60 feet, I’m screwed”

Then take the shot, whether pocket, compact, or a .22... maybe that’ll scare off the belligerents.

My whole point was this is an article about compacts. People are talking about 100 yard paper targets with a Walther PPK .380 and making 4 to 5 inch groups, I find that a little hard to believe but you know what, I’m going to go try that with a bench rest because I have access to both.

Personally I’ll go with Marine training, as it is as real-world as they can make it at the distances these encounters most likely occur, in the amount of time they most likely occur, with a caliber I would most likly use. From holster, to target acqusition, to double hammer, in a very limited amount of time. The stressors very, but those too, were/must be incorporated.

Do you compete in combat shoots?

As a close combat survivor in uniform, using an M9 in a few occasions simply because of circumstance, I can tell you that any handgun is quite inadequate for the task at hand. The “bigger hammer” paradigm truly applies when life is at risk. But you know that.

Do I compete in combat shoots? No, not currently not for a while now, but if being a former USPSA production gun B classified guy matters. I regularly maintain basic skills and practice the art of handgun self defense daily. I have used a handgun in civilian situations as well, thankfully not requiring to fire.

I find that the arguments regarding what to carry are superseded by the necessity to be able employ good tactics, situational awareness and threat mitigation techniqyes. As a semi-retired CCW trainer/instructor, I find that most folks who carry benefit most from marksmanship skills building, basic defensive tactics and mind-set training than run-gun playtime.

All combat shooting competition formats, USPSA, IDPA,steel etc. are games with rules that in varyibg degrees teach dangerous practices.

Regarding your USMC training, it was what it was. Pretty certain that has evolved too.

All I am saying is even with a mini-gun like the G27 I carry often, longer range precision is easily possible. I mean center of torso, but striving for a small group in skill building marksmanship practice cannot but help. As ranges increase, allowable technique error multiply rapidly, so a 3 inch group at 10 feet grows to a 30 inch one at 100 feet, barely across a street.

All but the worst handguns can do better than that, it is tge operator that is the weak link. But you know that too.

Semper Fidelis.

The 365xl with the clinger holster is a sweet setup.
