I feel like it’s long past time for the United States to deal with the cartel problem once and for all in Mexico and outside of Mexico. sounds like its a script or the author is paraphrasing. I find the conversation suspect and would suggest it was made up by the author to pull at the heart strings. I feel for the kid...there is no good answers on this. the kid was only doing all of this at the behest of someone who should be jailed.

That parents would use their child as an entry ticket and if the child doesn’t make it, so what make another, or better still, sue the US for ‘neglect’.

But being abandoned by parents to travel with criminals and then be dumped into the unknown, alone, as fellow travelers flee rather than be held responsible for the chid’s condition, causes no lasting psychological damage at all.
The parents should face jail time and the child should be returned forthwith to its country of origin so that country’s social services (yes, they all have them they’re not living in huts) can find that child a suitable home.
