Back in the 70’s and 80’s (showing my age) they published the Hugo Award winning short stories in a single volume every year. I don’t know if they still do or not.

But, for a few years I bought that book. It was mostly to have something on hand for a quick read. I was going to school and didn’t have the time for a lengthy read.

I rarely read SF anymore. But, when I do it is usually classic SF from the 50’s and 60’s. Even back when I read SF it was stuff that was far older than myself. Most of the newer SF that I did read was unappealing to me.

If you have any suggestions for a SF book, I am open to suggestions. I was reading Heinlein most recently.

I recommend the book “Genesis” by W.A. Harbinson.

And then for some nonfiction that reads like syfy, the book “An Impossible Invention” by Mats Lewan.

Suggestion: Old Man’s War by John Scalzi.
Like you, I grew up reading the classic sci-fi. I am not a fan of most of the newer stuff.

Gene Wolf, who until his recent passing, was the best living writer of English.

Book of the Long Sun - comprised of 4 books
Book of the New Sun - comprised of 4 books
Book of the Short Sun - comprised of 3 books
Urth of the New Sun

You actually have to either have an eidetic memory or read the series twice to actually understand the characters and how they interact through time.

Steven Baxter’s “Xeelee” series

Iain M Banks “Culture” series

If you're a fan of shorts, Baen publishes a lot of anthologies. Their catalog is pretty extensive, and their stable of writers is first rate.

If you'd just like to try some of their authors out, they have a section of their website called the 'free library', where you can download DRM-free ebooks in just about any format gratis. It's a great way to check out an author. Most of them are the first (and sometimes second as well) novel of a long series. Like any good drug dealer, the idea is that the first one is always free.
