Gallup Survey: Republicans Underestimate COVID Risks While Democrats Overestimate Them
HotAir ^ | March 18, 2020 | John Sexton

...On the other hand Democrats were more likely to know that COVID causes many more deaths than car accidents or the flu in a given year. They also were more accurate on whether or not the virus could by spread by those with no symptoms.

But Democrats got it wrong again when it came to rates of hospitalization. The actual rate is 1-5% but 41% of Democrats put the hospitalization rate at 50+ percent, which is way off. Meanwhile, Republicans were 2 1/2 times as likely to give the correct answer.

The survey added an extra wrinkle to this question. What if people were getting this wrong simply because they don’t really understand how percentages work to estimate risk. So they asked respondents to take a test called the Berlin Numeracy Test. If you’re interested in what the test measures you can read this BBC explanation or if you want to test yourself the BBC points to this online test created by The University of Oklahoma. I’m guessing most of our readers can ace it but you do have to stop and think a bit to get it. In any case, the point of including it was to ask how whether or not basic familiarity with statistical risk was the main driver behind so many people answering the question about hospitalization rates wrong.

And the answer was no. Even among those with high numeracy skills, Republicans were twice as likely to get the right answer and Democrats were nearly twice as likely to vastly overestimate....

There has been a lot of focus in the media on Republicans placing that risk too low (with Gov. DeSantis becoming the target of frequent criticism) and relatively little of Democrats placing it way too high.

Bottom line: Demonrats are much more wrong than Republicans about how serious COVID is.

“On the other hand Democrats were more likely to know that COVID causes many more deaths than car accidents or the flu in a given year.”

How can he state that as a fact? The only thing we know about the number of deaths caused by the ‘rona is that the figures we have been given by the deep state are immensely inaccurate.

Really? And if the given year is 1957?

Does the underestimating include or exclude all the fake data used to make it look worse? I think if died “of” covid numbers would make the republican underestimates almost perfect. Adding in the died “with” numbers still doesn’t come close to the democrat overestimates.

Result of the fake media daily propaganda campaign which libtards stupidly believe hook line and sinker while we so mistrust the leftist lying media to the point of believing the opposite.

I’d like to see the actual questions as opposed to Gallup’s interpretations of the answers.

I've had several family members and friends that have had very bad reactions to the vaccine...Think I'll wait a while.

Regardless of quantifying them being under or over estimated, referring to “Covid Risks” is the real problem.

Covid was created to initiate a plandemic, for which, very conveniently, the cabal had the perfect cure for: a vaccine. A jab that you’d take initially to get back to normal because we didn’t sufficiently flatten the curve. And then, take again because you need two. And again, because of variant strains. And again, because... boosters.

I think my test results were affected by choosing 3,400 euros this month instead of 3800 euros next month. Being an accountant, I am more likely to prefer a sure thing than a promise of future payment.

As an example, I would not sell Wimpy a hamburger today.

Especially given that we aren’t even counting all flu deaths as FLU now.

We didn’t even count H1N1 cases, they estimated them in 2009 and 2010 and picked the mid-range guess between high estimate and low estimate and they certainly didn’t use an “asymptomatic” standard.

The CDC changed the instructions on how to register deaths. Death where covid exists or is even suspected to exist is classified as a covid death, whether its related to the death or not at all. If covid is suspected, even if one rides his motorcycle at 120 MPH and crashes head on with a semi-trailer hauler, it’s a covid death.

That’s based purely on someone’s opinion as if someone actually KNOWS what the true risk of COVID is.

Real bottom line, leftists are measurably dumber than the general population. Their COVID 19 response indicates that lefties are dumb and would rather be scared sh*tless than to “follow the science”.

“whether its related to the death or not at all.”

And yet people swan about citing the “number of ‘rona deaths” as though they had accurate figures, and no one contradicts them.

Bottom line: the conspiracies that Covid-19 is not serious started to spread among Republicans, not among Democrats. And they hurt the reelection of President Trump, enormously.

I suspect that the conspiracies were initiated by leftist activists who routinely frequent conservative forums and try to plant misinformation. Usually, they are immediately recognized, but this time, they pulled off a major success.

It is sad, and it does not help Republicans or the conservative cause one bit to believe and spread conspiracies about Covid-19. I have been trying to fight the misinformation for months here, and will continue to do so.

Covid-19 has, so far, infected 29,870,136 and killed 542,995 in the US. This is far more serious than influenza (~22,000 deaths in 2019-2020). In total numbers of deaths, Covid-19 is now the third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer. One third of Covid-19 survivors have long-term effects, including reduced lung function, neurological issues, heart problems, and fatigue. I have observed that many people don’t care about the risk of death, but maybe they would care about having disabilities lasting for months, maybe years? I don’t know.

Yes, Covid-19 is actually serious. Yes, you should do whatever you can to avoid catching it.
