University investigates professor for criticizing communist regime
Liberty Unyielding ^ | March 21, 2021 | Hans Bader

At the University of San Diego, conservative law professor Tom Smith is being investigated for criticizing “Chinese” propaganda, based on the false premise that this constituted racial harassment of Asian-American students.

If Professor Smith can be disciplined for criticizing China’s government, then I could have been disciplined as a student for criticizing Russia’s communist government during the Cold War. When I was a student at the University of Virginia, I criticized “Russia” in a speech to the Washington Society and “the Russians” in an article in the University Journal.

Obviously, I was talking about abuses by the communist government of the Soviet Union, which ruled Russia at the time. But if criticizing China’s communist government were racial harassment of Chinese students — which it isn’t — then criticism of Russia’s communist government would likewise be racial harassment of Russian students. There were students of Russian ethnicity at the University of Virginia, and laws against racial harassment protect all ethnic groups, including whites. (See Huckabay v. Moore (1998)).

But no one viewed my criticizing “Russia” or “Russians” as racial harassment, for good reason. It was aimed at a foreign government, not an ethnic group. Similarly, Professor Smith’s criticism was obviously aimed at China’s communist government, as law professor Eugene Volokh notes. Smith discussed a Wall Street Journal article about how “China was seeking to intimidate and dominate the investigators” of COVID-19’s origins, including “China’s manhandling of the delegation” and “its forcing of the visitors into 14-day quarantine.”...

It’s basically illegal to criticize Communist China now in the workplace, on social media and soon in private.

I remember while working at MLB, a memo came out stating it’s in violation of MLB diversity standards to call it the Chinese virus.

For the Communist Chinese, they think they own all Chinese, regardless of origin. They are starting to exert a SE Asian Co-prosperity Sphere and ownership of all East and SE Asia.

At UCSD it’s a dangerous thing. Remember a few years back, the Communist Chinese government ordered USCD not to host the Dalai Lama? Some 15% of students are Communist Chinese.

The University of San Diego is ostensibly a Catholic institution. Try to imagine a professor at a Catholic institution being “investigated” for criticizing a communist government under John Paul II.

Professor Tom Smith is being “investigated” because:

1. He is a conservative, and

2) He is white.

The criticize China = anti-Asian connection is so thin that is obviously just a pretext for action against him because of the above.

If he has tenure, he shout threaten legal action for interfering with his freedom to research and teach as an academic.

So now you perpetrate racial harassment of Asians when you criticize the government of Red China. By that standard, the liberals at the Washington Post are guilty of racial harassment of Asians when they denounce the junta ruling Burma.

I share your disgust.

Correction, though. It’s not UC San Diego, it’s University of San Diego, a private Catholic university.

No surprise here.

The CCP is running the country now, after their vote fraud coup was a success (thanks to traitors in both parties).

I thought the “white Americans are all guilty of anti-Asian hate” was just a way for Democrats to put a wedge between Asian-Americans and white Americans. That may be but a bigger thing is that any criticism of the Chinese Communist Party or government is now “racism” and you will be punished.

I remember when Covid first hit. Filipinos were criticized for calling it the Chinese virus. Duterte apologized and implemented a anti-terrorism law. It’s now illegal to criticize the government or its allies. In this case, Communist China.

A Filipino domestic worker in Taiwan was to be arrested and detained after she made remarks criticizing Duterte and his pro-Chinese handling of the coronavirus.

Taiwan better give her asylum. She is dead if forced to return to the Philippines.

Other Filipinos abroad were warned on social media not to make any comments critical of Communist China

Standard modus operadi of Communist China for over a decade now. Usually going after governments. They went after Australia, Canada, the Philippines, Norway, South Korea, the UK and others, demanding these countries follow Communist Chinese law, standards and customs instead of their own.

They go after individuals (many cases of Australians being expelled from Australian universities for being critical of Communist China - the universities claim it as hate speech)

And we all remember what Epic Games, Activision and others did to censor players critical of Communist China, claiming hate speech again. (E-sports is a HUGE industry)

It has to be racist to criticize China, because Taiwan doesn’t exist. Ergo all Chinese are the same. Thus it is racist to criticize their government. Even if they are 5th generation Americans. [/s]

Never mind the chicoms have been destroying Chinese culture and confucianism.

Just like black on black crimes benefiting a collectivist industry destroying family and tradition, this one is slated to be pushed out to oblivion in the unconscious and in later generation into schizophrenia - as displayed here.

Those critics who raise the racism canard are themselves inadvertently collapsing the distinctions between an authoritarian regime and those who live under it.

This is probably the first propaganda step in readying the American public for the Chinese occupation of Taiwan.

Banning discussion of the Chinese government as racist will stifle calling out China when they retake Taiwan.

What's next?

Does Putin want Alaska back?

Will Macron in France demand Louisiana back?

Will the new American student Red Guard declare it off-limits to say these things, even in jest?

I do have to make a comment.

We have seen this ridiculous connection of geography with race, and thus racism. Even more this year than ever.

I would call attention to conservatives likewise calling speaking against Israel as being “anti-Semitic” (anti-Jew). This is a false equivalency to me. We need to be consistent.

Hint. It’s not only Taiwan. It’s all of SE Asia. So without a Pacific Trade a route, guess we just self-isolate.

Oh wait, we already gave the Panama Canal to the Chicoms.
And Europe is folding like a deck of cards.
And Denmark is ready to let Communist China build a base in Greenland (hint: there were reasons why Trump joked about buying Greenland)

Yeah, and today there was this story about a Chinese militia flotilla of about 200 boats encroaching on the Philippines, blocking fishing waters off the coast of Manila.

But there could be more than being “ultra-careful” about “offending” a goodly # of Chinese Communist students at UCSD——it’s a strange kind of conflating of “our” standards and “their” standards being the same-—it’s made to look like respect when in fact it’s a cover for spreading our own groupthink-—at this point it’s just as important not to offend the current Administration, which is helpfully doing the bidding of China everywhere you look.
