Roger Mudd, the longtime CBS News correspondent, passed away on March 9. In this video, Mudd speaks to us from the grave about disgraced CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather.

Roger Mudd, David Brinkley and Harry Reasoner were all better journalists than the hot head Dan Rather. All three of the former had a sense of humor and could give you the news straight.
Believe he was a descendant of Dr. Samuel Mudd, who was of course a figure in the aftermath of the Lincoln assassination. IIRC, Roger Mudd was involved in attempts to rehabilitate his ancestor’s reputation as Dr. Mudd was alleged to have added and abetted John Wilkes Booth.

Roger Mudd was related to Dr. Samuel Mudd, but not a direct descendant.
Phrase “my name is mud” appears to have a meaning like “I’m not very popular”. ... To say say “your name is Mudd” (or less scholastically “mud”) is a reference to Doctor Samuel Mudd, who treated John Wilkes Booth after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln.
Might be why Roger was trying to rehabilitate the good doctor and his name...
