Knute Rockne said he chose his "best eleven" not his "eleven best".
The team was vital but the choice was made by the coach.
And the quarterback and pitcher are still the ones credited with wins.
Donald Trump is now, perhaps, America's first real leader of the opposition.
A team leader who really stands out.
But all the people he represents are a team much much bigger than he is.
My family is related to Knute Rockne. My older brother is named John Knute Rockne.
I recall reading somewhere that the movie “Knute Rockne: All American” had the Ronald Reagan speech cut out of TV showings in 1980 as it was determined that that would have been unauthorized political advertising.
Reagan played George Gipp (the Gipper). Can’t recall any speech he made in the movie except on his death bed. Rockne was played by Pat O’Brien. It was Rockne’s speech, “Win one for the Gipper” that is most remembered.
Believe it was the “Win one for the Gipper” part that was cut out of some TV showings back then. All rather petty and silly though, lol.
Knute Rockne was killed in a plane crash near Bazaar, Kansas (closest small city is Cottonwood Falls) 90 years ago this month. He still is the greatest football coach of all time.
