The student is wrong because he did not research the definitions of words. Gender does not refer to persons at all. It is a grammatical categorization of nouns which has fallen largely by the wayside, the last vestiges with PC language. There are three genders in the English language- masculine, feminine, and neutral. Humans are divided into two sexes and only two, male and female, discernible in their chromosomes.
