Northern California would love to separate from Southern California. Eastern Washington and Eastern Oregon would love to jettison the I-5 corridor. Upstate New York and much of Illinois would like to be on their own. The list goes on...
It is a simple fact of human nature that big city elites will never understand “rural America” or the desires of rural Americans. It is not just regulatory stuff either.... the separation on social and educational issues is very wide.

To be fair, Republicans have won a large number of the counties in the country in presidential elections for some time now. They are the majority in many counties of under 25K population or so, of which there are many.
But you are correct that we are growing further and further apart as a nation. A poll of this sort inching up in terms of the number of people who think the best option is a national divorce reflects that.
